Curbing Sacramento Traffic Deaths The Sacramento City Council will vote to bring a Pedestrian Safety State of Emergency over the number of fatal pedestrian and cyclist crashes on city streets. Out of the 170 deaths this year, 18 were cyclists and 45 were pedestrians, according to the Sacramento County coroner's office. If approved, the state of emergency would require the city to run a number of public safety campaigns focused on distracted driving in addition to providing the public with regular updates on progress made. Sacramento Councilmember and current Vice Mayor Caity Maple drew up the proposal and explains how this state of emergency declaration would lead to a reduction in traffic-related deaths. Chocolatier Ginger Elizabeth From chocolates to an assortment of macarons, and an indulgent pantry of snacks, Ginger Elizabeth has been satisfying Sacramento’s sweet tooth for nearly 20 years - with a story that begins in Apple Hill. Atmospheric River A powerful atmospheric river is upon us and forecasted to dump rain, some snow, as well as bringing the risk of flooding and high winds across Northern California. It looks like wet weather is here for the foreseeable forecast - possibly into Thanksgiving. ABC10 Meteorologist Rob Carlmark explains how the forecast varies from the valley to the foothills and Sierra. Chad Hecht is a Research and Operations Meteorologist at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes and discusses what this means for our state’s water needs, and if this marks an end to wildfire season. Sutter Buttes Renaming Proposal Known as the smallest mountain range in the world, the Sutter Buttes are about an hour drive north of Sacramento and hard to miss among the flat agricultural landscape outside Yuba City. This year there has been a debate about changing the name from Sutter Buttes to Sacred Buttes, to acknowledge the abuse John Sutter committed on native Californians during the Gold Rush. Sutter County District 3 Supervisor Mike Ziegenmeyer explains why fellow county supervisors, and a petition of more than 1,500 signatures, oppose the name change. Shelly Covert is a Tribal Spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe and Executive Director of the California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP) and explains the buttes’ importance to Native tribal culture and why a name change is the right thing to do. California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot World leaders are wrapping up what is considered to be the most important annual meeting surrounding climate change - COP29. But this year comes with the uncertainty of an incoming Trump administration. California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot was part of a California delegation that traveled to both COP16 and COP29 and explains how the state is pressing forward with its own climate action.

    California Tribal College Issues | GOP Analysis of Election Results | Del Rio Trail Artwork

    Why students at California Tribal College are leaving the institution. GOP political consultant responds to the 2024 election results. Finally, new artwork and signage is going up along the Del Rio Trail. California Tribal College Issues Earlier this year, Sacramento State partnered with California Tribal College to help with accreditation and boost success among Native students. But around half of the initial cohort of students have left, with many saying the tribal college failed to uphold its promises. This comes as Sac State recently announced the formation of its own Native American College on campus. Emma Hall, Equity Reporter for The Sacramento Bee joins Insight to talk about the barriers students faced when applying to California Tribal College, and what it means going forward for Native students in higher education. CapRadio's broadcast licenses are owned by Sacramento State. The university also oversees the station’s finances and approves its expenses. Sac State does not oversee news production or programming. GOP Analysis of Election Results California went largely blue in this year’s election when it comes to the top-ticket races for the Presidency and the U.S. Senate. But the state’s election results reveal deeper complexities within California’s political landscape, with President-Elect Donald Trump increasing his vote share in most of California’s 12 Latino-majority counties, the approval of the tough-on-crime Prop 36, and the rejection of other measures to expand rent control and increase the minimum wage, among other steps. Political consultant Luis Alvarado provides a conservative analysis of these results, and what they mean for California’s political future. Del Rio Trail Artwork Traveling by foot or bike from North to South Sacramento has gotten a lot more interesting. A three-year-long project to transform 4.8 miles of trail into an outdoor museum is nearly complete. The Del Rio Trail preserves 23,000 feet of railroad tracks that parallel Interstate 5, allowing bicyclists and pedestrians another way to commute across town. And with 18 sculptures and 12 interpretive signs describing the art and history of the area, ambassadors hope the Del Rio Trail becomes a destination for visitors to the region. Donald Gensler is the City of Sacramento’s Art in Public Places Manager and he joins us to explain how a project like this gets done and what you might see if you venture out along it.

Why Voters Rejected Prop 6 California voters have rejected a proposition that would have ended forced labor in state prisons and allowed incarcerated people to focus on their rehabilitation. Prop 6 was backed by Democratic leaders, unions and advocates and faced no organized opposition. Joe Garcia, a California Local News Fellow with CalMatters talks about the reasons why Prop 6 failed to pass, and what the larger implications are for criminal justice reform in the state.  CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state. New Soccer Stadium Approved for Sacramento Railyard Sacramento City Council has unanimously voted to approve a proposal term sheet for Sacramento Republic FC’s brand-new stadium and an entertainment venue in the Downtown Railyards. This comes a week after the project was first unveiled, and five years after plans to develop a stadium in the Railyards as part of a Major League Soccer bid. Mayor Darrell Steinberg joins Insight to talk about what this new stadium means for Sacramento’s future. 'The Devil's Bath' Panel at UC Davis A UC Davis historian’s book on the practice of “suicide by proxy” in early modern Germany has inspired a new award-winning Austrian film that looks at themes of crime, religion, mental health and social environments. Filmmaking duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala talk about their film The Devil’s Bath, which is Austria’s entrant for the 2025 Academy Awards. Also Kathy Stuart, author of Suicide by Proxy in Early Modern Germany: Crime, Sin and Salvation (World Histories of Crime, Culture and Violence) talks about the history behind the film’s story. A panel discussion on The Devil’s Bath will be held tomorrow at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, and a separate film screening in Cruess Hall. The research tracks earnings five years after graduation, and includes a look at Sacramento-area colleges and universities. Eloy Ortiz Oakley, former chancellor of California’s Community Colleges and President and CEO of The College Futures Foundation and Michael Itzkowitz, president of the HEA Group break down the reports findings, and what they say about choosing a specific major compared to a specific school. Post-Election Anxiety and Stress Are you currently suffering from post-election anxiety? According to the American Psychiatric Association, anxiety among adults has surged this year, with many pointing to the recent presidential election as a major source. Even before the election, 43% of adults reported feeling more anxious than the previous year. Joining us to discuss how to manage all those feelings is Dr. Sara Aghamohammadi, a physician and Chief Wellness officer at UC Davis Health. He talks about the importance of passing Prop 3 and enshrining same-sex marriage rights in the California constitution, concerns the LGBTQ+ community has with the incoming Trump Administration, as well as what a change in Sacramento leadership means for the local arts community. Camp Fire Anniversary On Nov. 8, 2018 the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history ignited in Butte County, devastating the communities of Paradise, Magalia, Concow and Pulga. At least 85 people were killed in the immediate aftermath and more than 18,000 homes and other structures were destroyed. Rebuilding is still taking place to this day. Jen Goodlin is the Executive Director of the Rebuild Paradise Foundation and joins us with how survivors are marking this day.
