inspired by her 013: Jennifer Cohen- Athletic Director at University of Washington- Shattering the glass ceiling and unrelenting dreams

The show is packed with wisdom and insight from a woman that has shattered the glass ceiling. Jennifer Cohen just completed her first year as the Athletic Director at the University of Washington. Her successes are directly reflected in the outstanding year that the UW athletic department had from a NCAA championship in women’s rowing this past month to a college football playoff appearance. Her athletic department is on the rise there is no doubt that the success is attributed and rooted in her leadership and vision.

Jen is from the Tacoma, WA area and grew up a Husky fan, which she will tell you more about. She went on to graduate from San Diego State University in 1991 followed by earning her master’s degree at Pacific Lutheran Univeristy. She served in athletics admistration at Pacific Lutheran, U of Puget Sound, and Texas Tech before being hired by UW in ’98. She oversaw sports including football and baseball and played a huge role in fundraising where she was tasked with raising support for their stadium expansion.

When Jen was hired last May as the next AD of UW, she became the only female AD in the Pac-12 and only 1 of 4 female Athletic Director’s in the nation out of 65 power 5 Universities.

inspired by her 012: Kendall Johnson- Pro Soccer Player for NWSL Portland Thorns- How to stay focused, why meditation works, and how to overcome a concussion

We get to hear from Kendall Johnson! Kendall is currently a professional soccer player for the Portland Thorns and is also the creator of Arrow Living which is a blog and podcast for female athletes. Kendall is the first athlete we’ve had on the podcast that is currently competing so it will be fun to get her perspective. Kendall attended Lincoln High School in Portland which just so happens to be across the street from her current arena of competition, Providence Park. Kendall had great success at the high school level being named ESPN first team All-American and Gatorade state player of the year. For her efforts she was granted an opportunity to compete for the University of Portland which is renowned as one of the perennial soccer powers. She was also selected to compete for the U.S. U-20 team. In 2013 she was drafted by the Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. She went on to compete for the Western Sydney Wanderers and now for the Portland Thorns. The Thorns have become a must see event averaging over 10,000 fans and have seen upwards of 18,000 fans file into Providence Park. Pretty amazing how well supported the women’s soccer club is!

Kendall will discuss how she has remained so focused and driven toward her goals, how a concussion changed her outlook and life, and much more!

inspired by her 008 : Tanya Chaplin- Defining success & how to protect our sports driven children

This woman holds a special place in my heart because she’s a Beaver and has had much success coaching gymnastics at my beloved Oregon State. I’ve always admired how Tanya Chaplin has led her program to great heights but more than that, she’s always had incredible young ladies on her team and I think that speaks volumes about her as a coach and person.

Tanya competed collegiately at UCLA where she was a six-time All-American and two-time Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. She also is a three-time member of the U.S. National Team. She began her coaching career as an assistant at UCLA and Washington. In 1998 she was named the head coach at Oregon State where she is a five-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year, in 2011 was named the West Region Coach of the Year and she has led her team to 11 NCAA Championship appearances. Let’s get to know the woman behind all of the success!
