Coming Out of the Broom Closet

Coming Out of the Broom Closet

Pelayo grew up Catholic in Spain, Melissa as a Hasidic Jew in Brooklyn, and Fire Lyte as a Southern Baptist in Texas. On the surface, the contexts couldn't be more different. But, as we explore in our conversation, there are definitely parallels between living in these homogeneous religious communities.

We also discuss the experiences of coming out as gay and choosing a different spiritual path than what they were raised with. The questions, the struggles, and what remains unspoken.

Featuring Pelayo Alvarez and Melissa Weisz from The Forbidden Apple podcast, which explores faith and LGBTQ issues; and Fire Lyte, host of the pagan podcast Inciting a Riot.

    Unapologetically You

    Unapologetically You

Fashion is just as much about what’s on the inside. This week features a conversation with Rosemary Card, founder of Q Noor, a Latter Day Saint temple dress company, and Dilshad Ali, blog editor at Haute Hijab.

In our interview, Rosemary shares what inspired her to name her brand after the Queen of Jordan and we explore why there may be some crossover potential with the Muslim market. Plus Dilshad talks about how a self-described journalism nerd ended up running a haute couture fashion blog and how her company’s mission is to help Muslim women match their outward appearance with their inward confidence.

On the God Beat in SoCal

On the God Beat in SoCal

How has journalism changed in the midst of a pandemic? Alejandra Molina was only a few weeks in to her new job as a religion reporter when I caught up with her and colleague Deepa Bharath of the Orange County Register last September. Now a global crisis has upended all facets of society, including religious life.

In this two-part interview, I speak with Deepa and Alejandra about lessons covering the "God beat" before and during the pandemic, the diversity of Latino religious identities in SoCal, inspiring responses they've witnessed by faith communities, and the constant vigilance required to keep their parents away from online conspiracy theories.

    Church is Not Canceled

For Palm Sunday, a conversation with Jason Evans of the Episcopal Diocese of Houston, Texas. We discuss life during the pandemic: creating equitable access in his community, the spiritual implications of ‘Please mute yourself’, and adjusting the meter of prayer during Zoom calls.

And since Jason is a digital powerhouse, we also dish on how his family is absolutely rocking the homeschool plan with google spreadsheets.
