Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss a security flaw in Ecovacs products, the lack of evidence linking mobile phone use to brain cancer, new Apple products, and more. Up next, with an homage to the late Mark Lautenschlager that worked with us and did “Into Gamming” here on “Into Tomorrow” for many years … Bryan Young is diving into one of the most hyped releases in the galaxy — “Star Wars Outlaws”. Is it really the open-world game we’ve all been waiting for? Let’s hear his take. Bryan, what’s the word? Our guest this show: Kameron Graveline, Giving his thoughts on of ROG Ally X. Colleen in Naples, Florida clicked that AskDave mic button at IntoTomorrow.com and asked: "I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max for my personal use, and an iPhone 8 for my business use. They're on two separate accounts, two separate carriers as well as different Apple IDs. However every time they are next to each other, they start shaking, trying to sync and I cannot figure out how to make that stop and it's driving me crazy. Can you please help?" Colleen, what youre describing is probably iOSs AirDrop proximity feature. The idea is that rather than selecting a person from a list, you can share files, photos, videos, or contacts by bringing the phones together. Fortunately, the feature is optional and you should be able to disable it. To do that, go to your Settings app, from there go to General, then AirDrop. When you get there youll have two options, you can either totally disable AirDrop if you dont use it, or you can leave it on and disable a setting youll find under start sharing by bringing devices together That should keep them from vibrating when theyre close to each other and ready to pair to share files. Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss the Apple Glow Time announcement, safety tech to prevent wrong-way crashes, Facebook spying on conversations, and more. Our guest this show: Ryan McMahon, Senior Vice President of Strategy & Corporate Development at Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) and Robert Passmore, Department VP, Personal Lines at American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA). Cameron in Hattiesburg, Mississippi asked: "I was wondering what you would recommend for the best wireless charger device." Cameron, the best charger will depend on what phone you have. A small consideration will be MagSafe if you have an iPhone. MagSafe chargers can hold the iPhone in place, which means that youll find some chargers that will put the phone at eye level, or hold it tighter but allow you to reposition the phone. Its not a huge advantage, its just an option. If youre interested in MagSafe (and your phone is an iPhone 12 or newer), then you can obviously look at Apples own chargers, but there are also plenty of other options. For example, Anker sells a 2 in one charger for an iPhone and an Apple Watch for about $40. The main thing that will determine which charger is best for you is the power of the charger and the power that your phone can take advantage of. For example, if your phone can use it, a 20w charger will charge your phone faster than a 10w charger. The difference in prices based on wattage will be less than the difference based on brands. For example, a 10w Belkin charger is going for around $35 right now, as are Apples own MagSafe chargers online, while a generic two-pack from YooTech is selling for $25, and a generic 20w charger is selling for $14. The technology behind all of the chargers is standard, so you can go with a cheaper option and it will work, but it may not deliver the power its supposed to deliver or it may not come with a power adapter, or may come with one rated for less power, so paying a little extra for a brand name may actually help you out in this case. Weekend of August 30, 2024

Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss online selling and Gen Z, iPhone 16 and Apple Intelligence, Instagram location sharing, Toyota's hybrid plans, and more. Joe in Berkeley, Michigan asked: "I have a iPhone 11 Pro and I'm having issues of losing my calendar from the last year. So all my stuff from 23 is has been deleted. 24 still there. Hopefully you can help me retrieve it, or maybe change the setting to stop it from happening in the future. Thanks."Joe, Apples Calendar app will only show you events a year in the past and a year into the future.Beyond that, the search will not find the events.Theres no setting to extend those dates, unfortunately its a design decision likely made to make the search less confusing. The only option available to you is to use a different calendar app.Calendar 366 is an example of an app that will let you go back over a year, Fantastical can do it as well.If your calendar is provided by a large cloud services provider like Microsoft or Google their calendar apps or web platforms may be able to do it as well.William in Phoenix, Arizona called in to share some information with the audienceWilliam said: "I just wanted to say that in this political climate lately, it's important to know what youre seeing online. So, like, when you're on Facebook and Instagram, stuff like that. Well, Facebook especially, on Facebook, people can post anything they want, right? They can garner a lot of likes and shares and comments that are positive and in support of that post. If that post says something like breast cancer awareness or Alzheimer's treatment or just something heartwarming, maybe a puppy or kitten video or a picture, once it garners a lot of attention through hashtags and everything else, and gets a bunch of likes and comments and people sharing it. The author of that post can go back and this is in Facebook especially, can go back and edit that post to say anything they want it to say, and even take a picture or video down that they originally had and put a totally different one up. And then the likes and the comments and the shares will stay the same. And that's manipulation. Just be aware of a lot of posts that you see on Facebook. They may have been manipulated or mined for likes, before they were altered to say what they're trying to say after the fact. Just want to let you guys know that that's a real thing. Facebook hasnt fixed that yet. Love the show. Thanks, guys."Thank you, William! Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss the Procreate an art app for iPads and Ai, the International Space Station's 911 call, Chrome's experimental feature to block sensitive fields on screen shares, and more. Our guest this show: Kristi Kolski, Marketing Program Director at IBM Sports and Entertainment Partnerships . Ray in Niagara Falls, New York asked: "I need more information on that Tablo that they're advertising on TV. They give you the information they want you to have. I need to know if I can use this to block commercials. Commercials are longer than the programs if you time them."Ray, Tablo used to offer a premium service first introduced in 2019 that automatically skipped commercials. That service was discontinued in 2022 as the premium subscription never grew as much as the company anticipated and they couldnt cover the costs of providing the service without that growth in subscriptions.Tablo does not require a subscription, one is offered that provides a 2 week program guide and improved options like the ability to record a whole series rather than an episode. That subscription costs $5/month, but again, it does not include the commercial skipping functionality.Channels DVR can still skip commercials, but youre looking at having to set up a Raspberry Pi or similar computer to act as the server, which is not the same experience as buying a polished plug and play device.Unfortunately, since 2022, your choices to skip commercials on over the air TV got worse. Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss creating an Ai version of yourself with Meta, Google's Pixel phones with advanced Ai features, T-Mobile's class action lawsuit over price increases, and more. Our guest this show: Salima Lin, Managing Partner, Strategy, M&A, Transformation, and Thought Leadership at IBM Consulting. Jim in Delaware asked: "I am trying to start a podcast but I can not seem to find any podcast hosting sites that will do it for free. I know Anchor used to do it for free but I don't think they're even in existence any more. So any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much."Jim, Anchor in particular was bought by Spotify who later incorporated it into their services. Theyll host your podcast if you have a streaming subscription with them. There are still other hosting companies that will offer other limited plans for starting podcasters. Podbean offers a free basic plan for those needing less than 500 MB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth.Buzzsprout allows you to upload up to two hours of audio a month, but will remove your files after 90 days on the free plan.If you are willing to pay a small fee there are some options that are paid but still affordable. For example, we use Blubrry for our podcast hosting and their basic plan starts at $10/month if paid annually or $12/month if you stick to month to month and it comes with a website, the possibility of monetizing via an ad network, and unlimited downloads. Thats not too bad for less than the cost of some streaming services these days.Paid services will usually start making sense pretty quickly if your podcast grows, so if you choose one of the free ones to get started, keep an eye on what their paid plans look like or be ready to move to a better paid service once you start getting listeners. Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss Google being ruled a monopoly, Ford patent to snitch on speeders, Intel’s unstable processors, Microsoft’s response to Delta’s criticism following their global outage, and more. Our guest this show: Jeetu Patel, EVP & GM of Security and Collaboration at Cisco. Greg in Manchester, Tennessee asked: I have a friend that let a scammer get on their iPhone 12. I'm trying to remove the scammer stuff on there because they go into their bank account and they had to close the bank account. Should I reset the phone or should I try to find out what kind of apps the scammers put on there so they can look at the phone from a remote location? And if I do reset the phone, will the apps come back from the iCloud or what am I gonna lose on those apps on the iPhone itself? Greg, resetting the phone seems like a better move in case what they did is less visible than an app. For example, a VPN or an MDM (Mobile Device Management) profile that could be connecting the phone to a server that they control. The thing is, while iCloud may restore the phone, you probably dont want it to. Restoring the phone may mean restoring whatever was done to it like those possible network settings, or an app configured to give them access to something. Phones are a lot more locked down than computers and typically an app cannot access other apps data, the exception is if the phone is rooted or jailbroken, then anything goes. If you have concerns that it may have been jailbroken, deleting apps wont be enough and youre looking at trying to restore it to as close to factory settings as you can. Remember that accounts dont just live on your phone, so changing your friends passwords everywhere would be a smart move to make sure that they dont gain or retain access to anything. Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss YouTube as a TV streaming platform and its users, Meta's billion dollar settlement, digital coupons, and more. Our guest this show: Paul Crimm, Chief Technology Officer of Honeywell Productivity Services and Solutions. Rob on Block Island, Rhode Island asked: "My computer doesn't have a disk drive, so I want to buy one that I can plug into the USB port. That's probably a pretty easy answer for you, and it's probably pretty inexpensive, but I'd love to hear your recommendation. And question number two is I have a portable audio system with a mini jack for the auxiliary input. I want to use the system to play a long music mix, maybe three or four hours long that I have on a USB drive. Is it possible that you could recommend that outboard disk drive, which itself has a USB input, into which I could plug that music mix USB So that it plays on the audio system or if I'm trying to do too much with too few things. Is there another way to get music from that USB into the mini jack? Is there such a thing as a cord that is a USB female on one end and a mini male on the other? So that my audio system will know just to play the music?"Rob, external disk drives are standard and compatible across the board, but if youre looking for something that will work as effortlessly as possible then you can get one made by your computers manufacturer.Every manufacturer from LG, to Lenovo, to Dell, to Apple and everyone in between sell their own external CD/DVD drives. Thats not strictly necessary, they are standard and should be compatible with any device and these drives are a very mature technology (to the point of being largely obsolete) so you cant really go wrong no matter which you choose. Youll see a price range of about $25 to $100, theres no real harm in staying close to the low end unless you plan to use the drive a lot.In terms of piping audio to a mini audio jack, you can find players on Amazon for as little as $15 that will take a USB input and typically have some awful, tiny built-in speaker and an audio out jack. That may be the way to go. You can ignore the speaker and just use it as an audio passthrough interface. For example, a Hemobllo Mini Speaker sells for about $17 on Amazon, weve never heard of that brand before and likely never will again, but really its a glorified adapter that lets you press play and decodes the MP3 audio for you before piping it to the speaker.A compact MP3 player with an FM tuner, literally being sold as Compact MP3 Player With FM Tuner without even a made up brand name goes for about $22 right now. You can also get a bluetooth to mini audio jack adapter and just stream it from your computer or phone wirelessly. Long term that may be the most versatile and comfortable option and it also wont take up much extra room. For those youre still largely looking at $15 to $20 at any online store. Tech News and Commentary Dave and Chris discuss the Crowstrike global outage, YouTube's Ai policies, the effectiveness of influencer marketing, a ChatGPT security concern, and more. Our guest this show: Brian Moody, Executive Editor at Kelley Blue Book. Steve in Kenosha, Wisconsin asked: "I live in a small apartment, about 1000 square feet. Do I really need a mesh router? I want one, but do I need one? I know you guys have talked about that they can cancel each other out if you have too many. How many is "too many"? I have two right now but I was thinking of getting a third and putting it in the living room. I'm not really having an issue with dropout or anything so I'm not sure I really need it." Steve, if youre not having any connection issues then, no not really. Youll just be spending money for no reason. The point of mesh networks is to create a larger area of wireless coverage. You dont get a signal in a bedroom, so you add a device to repeat the signal and extend it into the bedroom. If you already have good coverage everywhere theres no benefit to adding more nodes. This is one of those if you need it you already know it situations. If you have no issues using your devices anywhere then youre all set, adding more wont benefit you in any way and they are not cheap devices. Youd be better off saving the money or treating yourself to something else youd like instead, a single mesh router will buy a whole lot of gallons of ice cream!
