Ayatollah Khomeini was adamant in his time that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remain distinct from the Iranian Republic. The IRGC's role, to Khomeini, was to protect the "republic" aspect of Iran. As Iranians prepare to go to the polls in June, it seems that this bulwark is all but certain to be shattered as the IRGC itself is gearing up—openly—to dictate not just who wins the election, but who replaces the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei after his death, violating Khomeini's "guardianship of the jurist" precedent.
