Finding the Positive with Bec Clarke (S14E8)

Finding the Positive with Bec Clarke (S14E8)

The summer race season is in full swing in New Zealand, and this week on the show Alyssa and Haley connect with Kiwi pro triathlete Rebecca “Bec” Clarke. Bec has two podium finishes so far, grabbing a third place finish at the Tuaranga Half triathlon and second place at Challenge Wanaka this past weekend. Her career in professional triathlon started on the ITU circuit back in 2012, but after some time away from full time racing, Bec came back to pro racing in 2019 and took on the long course circuit.

Bec gives us some advice on how to focus on the positive when dealing with comments on social media, and tells us why it is important to her to have people around her that will help her keep a positive outlook. She also tells us what races she is looking forward to once the world opens up to travel again.

Haley and Alyssa take on the great debate of cycling shorts vs. bibs. Where do you stand? Read about the pros and cons of each here: https://www.cyclingweekly.com/cycling-weekly/what-are-better-cycling-bib-shorts-or-cycling-waist-shorts-464405

On the Front Lines of Change with Kathryn Bertine (S14E5)

On the Front Lines of Change with Kathryn Bertine (S14E5)

This week Alyssa and Haley welcome back author, athlete and activist Kathryn Bertine. Kathryn retired from professional cycling in 2017 but has remained a fierce advocate for gender equity in the sport. Her most recent book Stand: A Memoir on Activism. A Manual for Progress details the ups and downs of challenges she faced confronting the injustices in women’s sport. She talks with Alyssa and Haley about being putting herself out there in writing the book, and also why she felt it was important to be vulnerable when she is standing up for women’s equity in cycling.

Kathryn also gives her advice on how we can all work together to create change in sporting culture, and reminds us that both men and women are equally part of the journey.

You can find all of Kathryn’s books as well as her documentary Half the Road on her website kathrynbertine.com and follow her on Instagram @kathryn_bertine

Write Your Own Story with Nia Obotette (S14E4)

Write Your Own Story with Nia Obotette (S14E4)

This week on the show Haley and Alyssa are speaking with writer and triathlete Nia Obotette. Nia is the author of the children’s book I Am A Triathlete which was released in 2020. She was inspired to write the book after realizing the widespread lack of representation of people of color in triathlon literature, and wanted to create a way for children like her own niece to see themselves represented in the sport. She hopes that by sharing the adventures of “Niya” through the book, children of color will be inspired to start their own journey into the sport of triathlon. Nia also shares her own journey of finding the sport of triathlon, and encourages all women to share their own unique stories.

You can buy Nia’s book on her website niatheauthor.com or buy it on Amazon and leave her a 5-star review! Follow Nia on Instagram @niatheauthor

Haley also brings us a special mini-interview with Hoka athlete Sika Henry, who was part of the Hoka One One Project Carbon X 2 on January 23rd as a pacer for fellow American Nicole Monette. She tells us about her role as a pacer, and how her marathon training over the last year helped her prepare for the event.

Stepping into Adventure with Carla Molinaro (S14E3)

This week on the IronWomen Podcast Haley and Alyssa are chatting with ultra-runner Carla Molinaro. In the summer of 2020 Carla ran the Lejog Route in the UK which spans from Lands End at the southernmost tip of England to John o’Groats at the northern tip of Scotland, covering the 824mile route in a record-breaking 12 days, 30 minutes and 14 seconds. She tells us what went into planning the trip, gives us the breakdown of her sleep and fuelling strategies, and what her recovery looked like after the massive effort.

Carla is a Hoka sponsored athlete, and she will be running in the Project Carbon X 2 100k on January 23rd in an attempt to set the British and European 100km record. Trials & Triathlon

I listen to Ironwomen Podcast every week but have never written a review. So here we go! Haley and Alyssa do a fantastic job finding amazing women to interview every week. Their research is astounding and the topics are always totally relevant. Locating and scheduling Victoria Anderson this week was an example of them working so very hard to find women that will add value to our lives. Victoria’s story of participating in the Astra Zeneca Covid trial was fascinating and loved her willingness to give back by enrolling in the trial. As Haley and Alyssa stated afterwards, the vaccines, thanks to people like Victoria, gives me so much HOPE! Also, her update on the gender equality at ITU Multisport World Champs was so wonderful to hear. Super opportunities for women in triathlon! Last, Haley’s mini episodes during Covid were fantastic and much appreciated as we all navigated an unknown world. Thank you Haley and Alyssa for your continued good work on the podcast!
