This week on the show Alyssa & Haley are joined by professional triathlete and 2021 Ironman 70.3 World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay. Lucy had an incredibly busy race schedule in 2021, competing across many distances and disciplines from Olympic Trials in swimming, to Ironman and sprint distance triathlons, and even a local 10k. She explains how she approaches each race with the mindset that embraces learning from new experiences, and hopes that by jumping into new things it will help to make her a better triathlete.

Lucy recently competed in the World Triathlon Championship sprint race in Abu Dhabi, finishing a very impressive 12th amongst a stacked field of short course superstars. She gives us a recap of the race, including how she dealt with the scorching heat, and also gives some of her insider tips for age group athletes who are heading to Abu Dhabi for the ITU Age Group World Championships next year.

In the lead-up to the 70.3 World Championships in St. George, Lucy and her team spent a few weeks training at altitude in Cedar City. Lucy tells us about what goes into having such a great team around her to support her in the pursuit of her goals. This team includes her sister Holly, who is a photographer and videographer, and also manages Lucy’s social media. Lucy talks about her close bond with her sister and why it’s important to her to surround herself with the right people. You can catch Haley & Alyssa’s interview with Holley Charles next week!

NCAA Triathlon National Championship Preview with Kinsey Laine (S16E10)

This week on the show Haley and Alyssa welcome back professional triathlete and NCAA triathlon coach Kinsey Lane. Kinsey is the Head Coach of the women’s triathlon team at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO. The last time we heard from Kinsey was in January 2020 and she was just getting geared up for her own 2020 race season. While the pandemic put a halt on her own racing aspirations, she used the opportunity to dive head first into her head coach role at Colorado Mesa. She talks about this pivot from professional athlete to coach, and what she loves about coaching athletes at the collegiate level.

Kinsey and her team are heading to Arizona this weekend for the NCAA Collegiate National Championships. She breaks down the NCAA qualification process, and gives us a behind the scenes look at what sort of training and racing strategy she uses with her athletes.

Dream Big with Ruth Brennan Morrey, PhD (S16E8)

On this week’s episode, Haley & Alyssa welcome back sport psychologist and former professional triathlete, Ruth Brennan Morrey, PhD. Ruth has a masters degree in Athletic Counseling/Sport Psychology, a PhD in Counseling Psychology, and a mindset coaching certification from Positive Performance Mindset Coach Academy. Since retiring from professional sport, Ruth has launched RBM Performance Coaching, mental skills performance coaching to help athletes build mental skills and character hardiness to discover joy, purpose, and true potential in sport and life.

Wanting to give back to her athletic community, Ruth describes how she shifted her mindset during the pandemic to use her extensive education to inspire other athletes to inspire others to dream big and find their own path. She explains why she believes it is important for athletes to make time for mentals skills training each day, just as they would for physical training. Ruth describes her three pillars of mental skills and the importance of building these foundational skills for triathletes. She also answers some listener questions, and tells us why we should all make mindfulness part of training programs now - not just on race day.

To learn more about RBM Performance Coaching visit Ruth’s website at rbmperformancecoaching.com.

Trials & Triathlon

I listen to Ironwomen Podcast every week but have never written a review. So here we go! Haley and Alyssa do a fantastic job finding amazing women to interview every week. Their research is astounding and the topics are always totally relevant. Locating and scheduling Victoria Anderson this week was an example of them working so very hard to find women that will add value to our lives. Victoria’s story of participating in the Astra Zeneca Covid trial was fascinating and loved her willingness to give back by enrolling in the trial. As Haley and Alyssa stated afterwards, the vaccines, thanks to people like Victoria, gives me so much HOPE! Also, her update on the gender equality at ITU Multisport World Champs was so wonderful to hear. Super opportunities for women in triathlon! Last, Haley’s mini episodes during Covid were fantastic and much appreciated as we all navigated an unknown world. Thank you Haley and Alyssa for your continued good work on the podcast!
