  1. 1 DAY AGO

Master Leaf Theatre Special - The Metronome of Professionalism

[Note: This episode originally ran exclusively at our Patreon page on August 21, 2024. As promised on the episode, since John Tavares was not signed to a contract extension before the Leafs' season began, the episode is now free for all to enjoy.] This summer, John Tavares was removed as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in favor of Auston Matthews. What followed a few days later was a cringy press conference at a restaurant and (predictably) a wave of even more cringe-inducing articles written by some of the stars of the Leafs Industrial Complex. Joined by actor, writer, podcaster and our friend Michael Paul Smith, we reinterpret these breathless columns in even more dramatic fashion, bestowing upon them the ridiculousness they deserve. Through Michael's emoting and our choices of cinematic music, we discover new classics such as children that don't exist (or getting used as cruel propaganda), new paths toward personal fulfillment, unfair dismissiveness, selfless acts of non-leadership and straight up lies. We also examine every excerpt and dissect just how insane they all are. Be sure to check out Michael's podcast, Ted and Michael Read Sketches Into Microphones. But that's not all. In the interest of equal time, we also speak with another friend, The Athletic's Arthur Staple, who lays out a bold and unlikely scenario in which Tavares returns to the Islanders should he hit free agency. It sounds crazy at first, but Art makes a compelling case that may make you actually want to see it happen. Just hear him out (and buy his wife Beth's book - The Snap: A Novel - available everywhere right now). Thanks to both Michael and Arthur for giving us their time and energy this summer. This is easily the best Master Leaf Theatre we've ever done and is exclusive to Patreon for right now. Should Tavares not be signed to an extension by the start of the season, we'll make it free for everyone. 2. Islanders Anxiety - You're Not Coming to Six Flags

Islanders Anxiety - You're Not Coming to Six Flags

Mike and Dan discuss the waiving of Pierre Engvall (and others) ahead of the Islanders' season opener this week against the Utah Sister Wives. Putting Engvall and the six years left on his contract on waivers was a bold move by Lou Lamoriello but it illustrates just how the team has changed and how Engvall's signature brand of ineffectiveness can't be tolerated any more. The guys who "beat him out" for the jobs aren't on solid ground, either, but for now, they have the gig. In the second half, they "preview" the game against the NHL's most focused-group new team and the follow up game against Cup hopeful Dallas. Then we get into our Super Specific Predictions for the Islanders and the NHL, which speculates goal totals, articles written, contracts extended and more. Finally, we allow a few minutes to discuss what hitting the 300 episode mark means. Thanks so much to everyone who listens and reaches out to us to thanks to this goofball team. We've fostered this very healthy, creative space and we could not be more proud, satisfied and happy. Here's to 300 more (and Reese Witherspoon, please contact us!). Subscribe to our Patreon! 3. Islanders Anxiety - The Cynic's Guide to Preseason Hockey

    SEP 30

Islanders Anxiety - The Cynic's Guide to Preseason Hockey

Mike and Dan "recap" the Islanders preseason so far including roster spot battles, empty intrigue and the mystery of Ilya Sorokin's status. With about 60% of their exhibition games over (of which Mike has watched zero minutes of, per his standard policy), the Islanders' are shaping up along expected lines. But a few players are vying for an open spot no one seems especially suited for, which might make next week's final cuts and waiver choices very interesting. They also discuss how Sorokin went from missing just "the first few days of camp" to missing essentially all of it while skating on his own away from prying eyes. It's a less than ideal situation for fans who just want to know what to expect, but it's par for the course under Lou Lamoriello. Finally, they examine Amazon's two upcoming forays into the hockey business and how one will make Thomas Hickey a big star and the other is unlikely to make new fans. Best wishes to our friend Brian Compton in his battle against MS. He has our full support. Subscribe to our Patreon! 4. Islanders Anxiety - Rookie Camp Special - The Shadow Team

    SEP 16

Islanders Anxiety - Rookie Camp Special - The Shadow Team

Mike and Dan recap some newsworthy items from Islanders Rookie Camp including PTOs to Keith Kinkaid and Matt Martin, and the absence of Cal Clutterbuck. After working out at Northwell Health all summer, Islanders fan Kinkaid finally gets a chance to play for his boyhood team. While the goalie's energy is infectious, it forced Lou Lamoriello to address injury concerns about Ilya Sorokin that have the hosts of several minds. Meanwhile, 13-year Islanders legend Martin comes to camp on a tryout with a shot to make the team, which might be awkward for him, his friends and the younger players trying to beat him out. And as of now, Clutterbuck remains in limbo, not coming back to the Islanders while pondering PTOs from other teams or perhaps retirement. An understandable move on paper, it will be weird seeing him play somewhere else, especially after the first healthy season he's had in a long time. Good thing the franchise retains a Shadow Team of ex-Islanders who are constantly around because they never actually retired. Subscribe to our Patreon! 5. 32 Thoughts About John Tavares Losing the Maple Leafs Captaincy

    AUG 13

32 Thoughts About John Tavares Losing the Maple Leafs Captaincy

Mike and Dan get together on a Monday in the middle of August to discuss a notable move for the Leafs and a massive celebration for Islanders fans. Announced via tweet by Pat Brisson mouthpiece Darren Dreger, John Tavares has been replaced as Toronto's captain by Auston Matthews, a move that has little to do with the official party line of Matthews' maturity and everything to do with Tavares' failures over the last six seasons. Wearing their usual kid gloves, the Leafs media will throw out phrases like "passing the torch" and "class" rather than calling out Tavares on how he has not lived up to the promise he was expected to deliver, and that Islanders fans have been hearing about for over a decade. We discuss how we got here, what this makes Tavares now and what the future might hold after the "C" is removed and an "A" or nothing is left behind. It's the summer so soak it in and don't forget how it feels. Subscribe to our Patreon! Members get ad-free episodes of the shows, bonus podcasts, written posts, discounts and much more. 6. Islanders Anxiety - Tidy Pieces of Business

    JUL 3

Islanders Anxiety - Tidy Pieces of Business

Mike and Dan empty their tanks on the Islanders free agency signings, the draft, the Rangers imploding and The Wedding of the Century. It's been a busy few days on Long Island, and they've been good for the Islanders. Despite the craziness of free agency day, they signed speedy winger Anthony Duclair and brought back defenseman Mike Reilly on two very reasonable deals. Before that, they had talented prospect Cole Eiserman fall into their lap at the draft, and took a few other notable names as well in later rounds. And across the Atlantic Ocean, the players and some former teammates shirtlessly partied the night away with The Chainsmokers at the Pulock wedding in beautiful Italy. Meanwhile, other teams are making regrettable mistakes or deluding themselves, the Rangers are publicly botching the trade of their captain, TSN and ESPN are insulting their audiences and prospect writers are shoveling more nonsense than usual. We have a lot to get to in this season finale, but most of all we thank you for hanging with us throughout another season and we hope we made it a little more fun for you. We'll be back in October (unless there's news to discuss). Subscribe to our Patreon! Members get ad-free episodes of the shows, bonus podcasts, written posts, discounts and much more. 7. Islanders Anxiety - The Two Kyles

    JUN 25

Islanders Anxiety - The Two Kyles

Mike and Dan look back at Kyle Okposo's Stanley Cup and Kyle MacLean's new contract before looking ahead to the NHL Draft and free agency with Ethan Sears of the NY Post. With the Panthers' 2-1 victory over Edmonton in Game 7, their long-suffering fans can finally feel some relief, while we can chuckle at the Oilers' failure, ESPN's issues and how many people were wrong about so many things this season. We're happy for a few former Islanders, and we're also happy a current Islander will be sticking around on a bargain deal. Meanwhile, the Devils got a goalie, the Rangers get bailed out of a bad contract (giving us an impromptu Ranger Piece Theater subject) and the Capitals get a guy who can sulk for them into the future. But that's not all! This supersized episode welcomes in Ethan Sears to talk about what he expects the Islanders to do at this week's draft, how they need to change (but might not) and how he enjoyed his time at the T20 Cricket World Cup at Eisenhower Park. Thanks again to Ethan for giving us some of his time this afternoon. Finally, we finish with some predictions and a call for the Islanders to pick an identity that can help them and us conceptualize our own Stanley Cup celebration. Subscribe to our Patreon!
