Live from the Lawless Zone: A Ghost in the Shell (2017) Round Table
For the occasion of the live-action adaptation of GHOST IN THE SHELL, I knew that an ordinary one-on-one discussion would not suffice: I had to gather a squad. Joining me to dissect the gleaming CGI prosthesis of Rupert Sanders' vision are David Sims (The Atlantic,) Alison Willmore (Buzzfeed,) Kevin Nguyen (GQ) and Justin Charity (this podcast, The Ringer, but mostly this podcast.)We discuss everything from the whitewashing controversy, to the production design, to THAT ENDING — as well as the box office performance and whether or not we can or should have Hollywood anime adaptations. SPOILERS ABOUND!

#8: "I'm Not Afraid of Anime Anymore"
In 1985, Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano, with the help of a seemingly infinite budget, made a haunting and singular video animation feature called ANGEL'S EGG, and this week I made former animephobe Molly Lambert (MTV News) watch it and talk about it with me. Good news: she's not scared of anime anymore! Bad news: We can't really tell you what happens in this film. But that's not really a bad thing — it may or may not be Oshii's meditation on losing the Christian faith, and as such is a bramble of amazing dreamlike imagery and nihilism.
In the second half of the episode, Eric Thurm (Drunk T*D Talks) and I continue down the Madoka sinkhole, into That Episode and more. There was so much to discuss, from income inequality in Mitakihara City, how to make a cat cosplay as Kyubey, and crushing loneliness.
In completely predictable news, Madoka Magica is proving to be too thematically dense for one podcast! I’m Sad To See You Go 😥
I was a fan of Night Calls and am sad that the show ended. So I was excited when I stumbled upon your name on this podcast. But I see that this one has already ended. I’m sad again.

I love podcasts and love anime both and this is literally the first anime podcast that is actually listenable. I really hope it sticks around!

I was so engrossed in an episode I crashed my bike! Emily is a great listen and anime is a interesting topic to learn about. 5 stars!
