It's in Germany Here Weed Go!

    • Earth Sciences

How's it growing folks! Welcome back to Here Weed Go! This episode I’m focusing on what’s happening out in Germany.

For those who might not be aware, back in 2016, the German federal government approved legislation for a restricted medical cannabis program. Patients obtain a medical prescription from a doctor and the government grants licenses to a few companies to help cultivate the plant.

Fast forward to 2021, when the new German governing coalition announced a plan to legalize cannabis for recreational use. Although no legislation has been proposed yet, most industry insiders believe that could come as early as 2024.

To help explain more about where Germany is headed, I interviewed Anna-Sophia and Niklas Kouparanis, the co-founders of Germany’s largest cannabis company, Bloomwell.

Together, they help explain what some of the differences are between US-style and German/EU-style medical programs, how Bloomwell came to be and how it plans to operate in the face of coming legalization, and what the pair think about a possible expansion into the fractured but huge American cannabis market.

One note: This interview was recorded on the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center during MJBizCon 2022, so there may be patches of audio that are a tiny bit scratchy.
