Revolutionary

This is an amazing show—super focused on justice for victims, and especially for unsolved cases! I look forward to it every week. Using podcasts to help solve crimes is truly an innovative use of the medium, especially with the rise in social media as a tool for investigations.

The Murder Squirts

I just completed Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad [2019] (so far).

This is an Exactly Right production (produced by the creators of My Favorite Murder). It’s a true crime podcast that tries to help solve crimes.

Somehow when I first started listening I didn’t understand (because I’m stupid) that they were actually trying to solve murders, so I wasn’t into it at first.

Another reason being that I personally don’t think the hosts are particularly interesting by themselves (and could use a third person, maybe a comedian to even it out). Don’t get me wrong though, I do like them.

Also the stories aren’t particularly interesting either (though they aren’t boring), but they are actually trying to solve a crime for Christ’s sake, so most of my rating points are based on that.

The Hosts:

“Paul Holes is a former cold-case investigator for the Contra Costa County District Attorney. Holes is known for his contributions to solving the Golden State Killer case using advanced methods of identifying the killer with DNA and genealogy technology.”

Billy Jensen: “A true crime investigative journalist focusing on unsolved crimes, citizen detectives, and crowdsolving. Author of “Chase Darkness with Me: How One True Crime Writer Started Solving Murders.

“Helped finish “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” after friend Michelle McNamara’s untimely passing.” (It should also say Jensen is a typical white dad with NPR-style unfunny dad jokes. He appeals to me less than Holes (that’s what she said?) but is still likable somehow.)

Holes has been described as a “man’s man” and is charmingly unfunny and uninteresting besides his knowledge of crime, but I have to say, I still like him. When you wanna hear someone talk about crime facts and the ins and outs, he appears to know his stuff.

Random: Randomly once every episode or two there is a woman that makes a random comment. It’s always odd because it’s unexpected and jarring, despite her overly quiet voice. It’s very odd. I’m sure at some point she was introduced but I missed that part.

If you’re the true crime lover that likes MFM or can’t get enough of true crime, then this is for you. If you’re like me and prefer the most unique of true crime stories, then you may only find this slightly interesting.

But mainly because I love the approach they have to solving crimes, I try and forgive most of the rest. I give this podcast 6 stars out of 10.

Love this Podcast!

I can’t tell you how much I love this podcast! The care and empathy of the hosts on every case is of course one of the many reasons to love the show. What I really love? Are the u inquest perspectives that both Paul and Billy can offer to helping to solve the cases discussed. Paul’s experience investigating and from a science perspective with DNA and the like. Billy’s insatiable need to investigate and find offenders and victims via social media. It’s actually inspired me to look into my grandmother’s death. Labeled a suicide? But I don’t believe, nor does my dad believe that the circumstances point to that.
Also, to add to the wisdom teeth discussion? I don’t have any! Born without them!
Keep up the good work fam! The effort doesn’t go unnoticed!
