Having a non-parental mentor has enriched my life in the most beautiful of ways. But it's important to find the right mentor or leader, who has your best interests in mind. Jeff Morgan was my first mentor and the first example of a well rounded leader that I had witnessed. Today I'm talking with Jeff about what responsible mentoring and leadership looks like. When you find someone who wants to mentor you, or you want to be mentored by, ask yourself, does this person have your best interests in mind, or are they fueling their ego by trying to create a mini version of themselves. We have a lot of examples of shadow leaders in the world right now, but that doesn't mean we all need to follow that path. The right mentor/ leader is like a life teacher, they know when to add information or back off to help guide you towards your mutual goals. This is a big test of the ego for all parts. To be mentored, we need to put our ego's aside to accept the new information. To be a mentor, you need to be aware of what it's like to be looked up to. Although you may hold more knowledge, or be directing the path of someone, you are still both humans and you are on this path together.
