Jocko Podcast Civil War Excursion With JD Baker Pt.6: The Battle of Gettysburg

By July 1863, the Confederate army’s continuing success in battle emboldened General Lee to move the war into the north. While Lee and his troops passed through Maryland into Pennsylvania, Lincoln replaced General Joseph Hooker with General George Meade, who hastily pursued Lee. On the morning of July 1, the two armies finally met outside of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Jocko Podcast Civil War Excursion With JD Baker Pt.5: The Last Battle of Stonewall Jackson

The Battle of Chancellorsville raged in Virginia May 2 through 6, 1863. Union General Joseph Hooker failed and gave a decisive victory to the Confederates. However, the victory was not a cheerful one for the South. On the night of May 2, Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson and his men, returning from an attack, were fired on by their own Confederate brethren who thought Jackson’s group was Union soldiers. Jackson was hit by two bullets in his left arm, which was then amputated. Eight days later Jackson died of complications from pneumonia.

Moments of Palpable Silence

As I understand it, one of the sins of broadcasting is “dead air” - any period of time where something isn’t being sent to the listener or viewer. Jocko edits none of it out. And some of the most powerful moments on this cast are when he allows the words being spoken or read to hang in the silence. To allow the listener a chance to absorb and contemplate what they just heard. And if you look at his lineup of guests and the gravity of subjects he chooses to address, it’s no wonder that those moments of silence carry so much weight. Thank you for your service, sir, and your continued service in bringing these people and their stories to your listeners.
