I'm in a funk is one of those things that most of us feel every now and again. You know that feeling of just being out of sorts and losing perspective of what is good in life? Well we received an email from a listener of Join Up Dots, who isn't just feeling the "I'm in a funk" vibe for a few days. This listener has been in this state of mind for a few years now. So lets start with the question and then of course you can listen to the show to hear the answer. Listener Question Dear David, i am reaching out to you to see if you can share some insight as to the steps I can take to change my current situation. I'm in a funk. Mentally and physically I am feel more and more lethargic everyday, and ill be honest I stopped listening to your show for about a year as your chirpiness and positivity started to make my skin crawl. I would think "Oh, just f**k off" and switch off the podcast, even though I admit i was in the wrong and knew that you were right. Now a year later, and through all the changes that have been forced upon us from powers outside of our control I want to take back the control in my life. I am sick of being the person who lets life happen to them, and want a piece of what you have. So two questions, if you have time to respond. Firstly, do you ever get into a head f**k place when you just cant shake yourself out of a slump? Do you ever think "Im in a funk" at all? And secondly what can I do to start making a difference in my life? This is a problem that so many people struggle with when designing an online business and spend a fortune on an expert to help them with. But they dont really need to with a little bit of thought and planning. So lets start with the question and then start breaking things down Listener Question Dear David and everybody at Join Up Dots. Very quick question which i thought might be a good episode to do. What is branding in business? I keep on hearing it from yourself and other podcasts that i listen to, but nobody really explains it in terms that i understand. Would you be able to shed some light on this? Thank you so much Jennifer Anymore, Connecticut What Is Branding In Business Step One Branding is not an image, a logo a colour scheme or anything to do with a visual. Although it is all of those things too. Branding in business is what you do, say, react and demonstrate time and time again to your customers that makes them love and understand what you are about. From the URL of your business, through to buying a product there has to be a key simple message. What do you do that makes your customer trust you, understand you, and want to come back time and time again. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon says this brilliantly when he says "Branding Is How Your Customer Talks About You When You Are Not In The Room" Could this be classed as integrity? Could this be classed as pure customer service? Once again it is all of these things and a lot more. What Branding Is Not Branding is not simply a logo or a colour scheme, but actually starts right from the URL of the business. Does your company name state clearly what you business is going to offer BEFORE the customer even lands on your website. For example, our business is called Join Up Dots which actually doesn't make too much sense when you first find us. How about if we called it "Online Business Made Easy"...would this make it more obvious? Yes of course it would, which is why URL's like these cost a fortune and so desired by so many businesses. Now, most of us can't afford one of these but we can get around the problem by adding an obvious slogan, and really focused images and content. Every interaction and content has to reconfirm the thing that you do that other people dont do. What Is Branding In Business - The Amazon Way When we think of Amazon do we simply think of all the goods that they sell, or do we think of the ease of buying those goods? Well for me, it is "ok, lets go to Amazon as I can have it tomorrow" Its their efficiency and ease of purchase that is the key to me using them. I dont even look at the prices as I dont care about that...i just care about getting the item quick and easily. And that is a massive part of their business and is the question that they answered with their branding. What is the customer really wanting and how can we be known for that thing more than anyone else out there. Once you get that running through your business then things become very easy indeed.

She is a lady who I'll be honest I am a huge fan of her work, in fact such a fan that I had to invite her to appear on the show for a second time. The first time she appeared we discovered that she is a singer, musician, songwriter, actress and has one the bubbliest characters it has been delight to come into contact with. This is a story of a talent shining brighter due to the knocks and obstacles she has been required to overcome. Whilst pursuing her recording and acting career, Sarah Caltieri lost most of her vision at age 23, through type 1 Diabetes, as a result of a common diabetic eating disorder (EDMT1) from her late teens. How The Dots Joined Up For Sarah After going through laser treatment and many operations and rehabilitating herself after having lost everything (job, driving licence, independence), unstoppable and unperturbed by obstacles and negative attitudes, she continued pursuing her career. The experience simply made her more determined to follow her own path and become a success, and i have no doubt that her future is a very bright one indeed. And then when everything was going great an accident with a supermarket trolley, knocked her whole business off track, and left her with a career with one wobbly wheel that wouldn't go where she pushed it. So being a creative person, does she find the business side of everything a complete drag, or something she enjoys? David is one of the most generous, transparent people in the digital marketing/online business space. You’ll amass an immense amount of knowledge just by listening to his interviews and episodes which, unfortunately, is entirely too rare in this industry where everyone’s just looking to provide enough information to pique your curiosity enough to get you to purchase a half-hearted, out-of-date product.
That’s not what you’ll see from David, so I strongly recommend giving him a follow if you want a ton of free insight and guidance to help you on your online business journey!
