    The Anti-Imperialism of Iran in West Asia (w/ Max Ajl)

    In this episode, Max Ajl returns to the podcast to discuss the ongoing anti-imperialist struggle in West Asia involving Iran and the Axis of Resistance. We discuss what this current war reveals about the state of imperialism today, the US-Israeli relationship and possible contradictions between them, Iran’s sovereign military technology, as well as how global South states can orient toward greater energy sovereignty, including with green productive forces from China, after Iran’s effective nationalization of the Strait of Hormuz.     In this episode, I have a wide-ranging conversation with Ju-Hyun Park regarding the politics of the DPRK. We discuss the central role of the US’ economic warfare in structuring how development takes place; we looked at some of the recent innovations in the DPRK’s socialist development model, including a focus on rural development; finally, we looked at the DPRK’s record on international solidarity, particularly with Iran and in West Asia, as well as the current state of anti-imperialism in Asia.     Scars and Medals: Palestinian Resilience and Resistance amidst Occupation (w/ Mohanad Alsayed)

    In this episode, I speak to Mohanad Alsayed about his new memoir titled “Scars and Medals”  released by Iskra Books. This memoir is a granular look at the occupation of Palestine from the perspective of Mohanad and his family. He tells the story of his grandmother who lived before Israeli colonization in 1948 and was forced to flee and rebuild their lives; he tells his story of growing up as a child under military occupation in the West Bank, and the story of finding his long lost uncle who was a resistance fighter that fled Palestine when he was very young and was on the run from Mossad, never to be heard from afterward. This is not just a story of occupation and hardship, but also one of agency, resilience, and resistance.     In this episode, I have a wide-ranging conversation on Pakistani politics with Ammar Ali Jan. We look at the role Western imperialism has played in the country and in the region, how Pakistan is viewing this US-Israeli war on Iran, we look at Pakistan’s recent military campaign against Afghanistan, the role of China in Pakistan, as well as the history and contemporary state of the left and progressive forces in Pakistan. Ammar Ali Jan is a historian and the general secretary of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Party in Pakistan. He is also a cabinet member of the Progressive International.     In this collaborative episode with Return to Bandung, Pranay Somayajula and I have a conversation with Gabriel Rockill loosely centered around his new book ‘Who Paid the Pipers of Western Marxism?’. We discuss how a distorted, effectively pro-empire form of Marxism, or radical politics more broadly, came to dominate western academia, how to understand academia as an intellectual industry almost just like any other industry, where the space exists for anti-imperialists to intervene in the otherwise bourgeois-dominated intellectual space, and where the ‘battle of ideas’ goes from here onward through the 21st century.     Bollywood in Indian History: Decolonization, Development & Shifting Class Dynamics (w/ Dr. Tejaswini Ganti)

    In this episode, I speak with Dr. Tejaswini Ganti, who is a Professor of Anthropology at New York University. We discuss the the emergence of the Hindi film industry in India during the era of Indian independence from British rule, how Hindi films during this era became popular across the world from the Soviet Union to North Africa, how the industry later transformed into Bollywood in the 1990s, and how the class character of films and film-going audiences changed during this period. We also look at some of the more recent developments in Indian film, including the rise of South Indian film industries and the saffronization of Bollywood.
