Today we know what no previous generation knew: the history of the universe and of the unfolding of life on Earth. Through the astonishing combined achievements of scientists worldwide, we now have a detailed account of how galaxies and stars, planets and living organisms, human beings and human consciousness came to be. And still . . . we thirst for answers to questions that have haunted humanity from the very beginning. What is our place in the 14-billion-year history of the universe? What roles do we play in Earth's history? How do we connect with the intricate web of life? This podcast series is part of a larger project called Journey of the Universe that invites us to reflect on these questions. It consists of a film, a book, a series of conversations, and online classes. The creators of the Journey project imagine that by knowing more about the universe and Earth we will also know more about ourselves. This may give us grounds for navigating our own journey in challenging times. How did we come to be part of this universe story? How do we belong and how can we participate in its future flourishing? This series is a gateway into exploring these questions.Connect deeply with these materials and more via the Journey of the Universe: A Story for Our Times Specialization, a series of Massive Online Open Courses hosted by Coursera and created by Yale. Interrelatedness

    Interrelatedness

Today’s episode features the power of Interrelatedness – the universal presence of relationship and care found between all beings throughout the many epochs of the cosmos.
In this podcast, Brian explores how care is at work in the universe, including, but not limited to, human relationships.  Brian touches on the thrilling nature of relationships and how through care, we gain the capacity to identify worth and to be sensitive to what others need.
Brian examines how the universe has shown itself to value the dynamic of “care” from the very beginning of the universe and through the development of life.  In doing so, Brian shows how the universe is, in some sense, seeking to deepen and extend its power of care.
Just as a primordial power of care was evoked out of the elementary particles of the early universe, a deeper and more expansive power of care is currently being evoked out of the human species.  This is happening as we activate a sensitivity that can feel the need to care for the planet as a whole.  Through empathy and imagination, humans provide the perfect vessel for a comprehensive care to come forth in the universe, adding both meaning and purpose to our role in the cosmos.
We hope you enjoy the Journey.

    Transformation

    Transformation

Today’s episode features the power of Transformation --  the process through which change is worked into the whole context by the individual.
In this podcast, Brian discusses how the universe engages in space-time binding to create increasingly complex structures that transform that universe as a whole.  Each new and more complex structure is understood to be a transformative event where space and time fold back on itself and more of the universe is present in one place.
Brian traces the evolution of transformation throughout the history of the universe, beginning with the emergence of physical structures such as atoms, stars, galaxies, and planets.  These structures transform the universe such that life and memory can come forth.  As life grows and evolves, Earth itself is transformed, enabling the planet to support increasingly complex forms of life.  With the arrival of humans, the power of transformation is brought to new levels through our capacity to engage in symbolic consciousness.
The history and evolution of the power of transformation gives us insight into what the universe is all about.  The universe is aiming to transform itself over and over again so that the universe as a whole can participate directly in the evocation of community.  Earth, our vibrant, intense, and complex home can thus be understood as a place where community has the potential to thrive and as a robust expression of the power of transformation.
We hope you enjoy the Journey.

    Transmutation

    Transmutation

Today’s episode features the power of Transmutation --  the process through which the universe is compelled to move from one mode of being into another.
In this podcast, Brian discusses how the universe utilizes the dynamics of constraint, discernment, opposition, and even rejection to move into ever deepening expressions of intimacy and beauty.  To bring this power to life, Brian explores transmutations like the cooling of Earth's crust to make mountains, the dynamics of the predator / prey relationship, and how laws and customs form human culture.

The present change we are sensing is happening at the deepest levels of being within the human species.  Learn more about how the universe changes at its deepest levels and you will likely find the context and insight needed to support your journey during these challenging and exciting times.
