    S2 E7 - Directing An American Pickle w/Brandon Trost

(This episode was recorded August 16th, 2020)

This is episode 7 of season 2! Today I have BRANDON TROST. Brandon just helmed the new Seth Rogen movie “An American Pickle”, now streaming on HBO MAX. Brandon is also our very first repeat guest, but he’s accomplished some much lesser-known and less prestigious things like shooting The Disaster Artist, Neighbors & Neighbors 2, This Is The End, Can You Ever Forgive Me, and I think I’m seeing a 2022 Sesame Street feature on the horizon. Brandon is a wealth of experience and is definitely someone I regard as part of the new class of comedy filmmaking. Here’s my chat with Brandon Trost!

    S2 E6 - The New Normal w/ Patrick Tomasso

Patrick Tomasso is the King of Compact! The Titan of Tight! The Emperor of Efficiency! This Canadian prince and veritable Twitter goldmine gave me some FaceTime to discuss shooting mobile content for brands on social, a hyper-mobile workflow that’s all about streamlining, and the “Video YouTube culture” conundrum. Also, black ice cream? We see you. Enough!

S2 E5 - Studio Stills For Marvel And Beyond w/ Matt Kennedy, SMPSP

(This episode was recorded on July 19th, 2019)

This is episode 5 of season 2! Today’s guest is Matt Kennedy, Unit Still Photographer for major feature films such as Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Fate Of The Furious, The Purge, and Star Trek: Picard.

We talk about what it’s like shooting huge studio projects, the difference between Unit Production Still and BTS, how production photos get used in marketing, and much more.

I love doing these in-person interviews because they flow so much more naturally, and I especially loved talking to Matt and picking his brain as this was a lot of new information for me as well. Also I downed a giant iced coffee before the interview so enjoy!

    S2 E4 - Film Riot w/ Ryan Connolly

This is episode 4 of season 2! I chat with Film Riot host and Triune Films director Ryan Connolly to talk about humble beginnings, making content about content, and a LOT of Jurassic Park. Ryan has some great wisdom about growth and learning by experience before anything else. Enjoy!

(NOTE: The audio is rough. Sorry. That’s on me. Lost the master recording in a bunch of reorganizing and had to use the Skype recording.)

S2 E3 - Going Deep, Man w/ John Paul Summers

S2 E3 - Going Deep, Man w/ John Paul Summers

This is episode 3 of season 2! Today I have Director of Photography, JP Summers. JP and I dive deep into the existential questions that haunt filmmakers like “does my work have meaning”, “is social media ruining my expectations”, and “why is my focus always soft”. JP is a deeply empathic and sensitive human being who pours himself into every project, and I’m glad to call him a (long distance) friend.

PLEASE support the final days of his Kickstarter for “Sunday Girl”, his new feature film. There’s only a few days left, and every bit counts! I was the first backer for the project, so let’s give him a Just Fix It In Post final push!

S2 E2 - Editing Saturday Night Live w/ Adam Epstein

S2 E2 - Editing Saturday Night Live w/ Adam Epstein

This is episode 2 of season 2! Today I have editor extraordinaire, Adam Epstein! Since 2009 he’s been working in the Saturday Night Live editorial department, most recently as the lead editor for the pre-filmed sketches, what used to be known as SNL Digital Shorts. We talk about humble beginnings in high school broadcast announcements, working under crazy deadlines, which was mostly news to me… I always assumed they filmed those a couple weeks in advance, but the real answer will shock you. He’s also worked on Documentary Now! Starring Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, as well as the new Comedy Central show “The Other Two”.
