#211: Transforming Senior Lives: How Linda MacDougall Champions Healthier Living!

Meet Linda MacDougall Linda got her M.A. in Counseling Psychology because she was seeking answers to family dysfunction.  She already had a background of working with the developmentally disabled population since high school.  She went on to be an administrator of two group homes for United Cerebral Palsy for over a decade.  Following her ex-husband's career, she then moved to Hawaii and became a Federal advocate for the state of Hawaii's families dealing with their population of developmentally disabled.  Her work there brought change to the system in the way of studies and a medical review board as well as the state guardians beginning to imitate her way of questioning and challenging the way things had always been done. Today her focus has changed to the older adult population.  She is a senior health advocate and massage therapist, a holistic health practitioner, and a management consultant for caregiving situations.  As a senior herself, Linda is also an advocate for change in the senior living space.  Her background and focus on awareness led to the writing of her book "The SPIRIT Method of Massage for Seniors: Raising the Bar...A Primer for Massage Therapists and Caregivers". #210: From Army Brat to Author: How Cary Herwig's Past Inspires Her New Army Brat Haunting Book series.

Meet Cary Herwig Cary discussed her journey into writing, starting professionally in her 40s. She emphasized the challenges of writing, including the need for multiple drafts and the importance of finding one's voice. Cary highlighted the evolution of publishing, noting the shift from traditional publishers to self-publishing, which now has a better reputation. She advised aspiring writers to attend writing conferences for networking and learning. Cary also mentioned the role of technology, like computers, in easing the writing process compared to typewriters. Army Brat Haunting Book Series Cary's 'Army Brat Haunting' series is a collection of four books, each about 30,000 words, forming a larger narrative. The series follows Vivian, a young girl who encounters ghosts while moving with her military family. The books explore themes of curiosity and mystery, with settings in Kentucky, Tennessee, France, and Texas. Cary drew from her own experiences as an army brat, incorporating historical and cultural elements. The series is intended for a broad audience, including younger readers and those interested in 1950s nostalgia and ghost stories. Travel Experiences and Personal Stories Terry and Cary shared personal travel experiences, highlighting the impact of travel on their lives. Cary recounted her childhood travels as an army brat, living in nine states and France. Terry shared her husband's experiences as a Merchant Marine, traveling globally. They discussed the importance of traveling while young and healthy, emphasizing the enriching experiences and cultural exposure it provides. Cary also mentioned her travels to Canada, England, and Egypt, expressing a love for historical sites and old countries, which influence her writing and personal growth. Advice for Aspiring Writers Cary offered advice for aspiring writers, emphasizing persistence and the importance of finding one's voice. She recommended joining writing groups and attending conferences for networking and learning. Cary warned about the potential pitfalls of writing groups, where members might rewrite others' work. She stressed the value of having alpha and beta readers for feedback and the importance of thorough research to ensure accuracy in writing. Cary also highlighted the role of technology, like using Word's read-aloud feature, to improve writing quality. Self-Publishing and Marketing Cary discussed the evolution of self-publishing, noting its improved reputation and the opportunities it presents for authors. She mentioned that self-publishing allows for greater control over the publishing process, though it requires authors to handle marketing and distribution. Cary highlighted the importance of learning to pitch books effectively and attending conferences to connect with agents and editors. She also noted that while self-publishing can be lucrative for some, it requires significant effort and is not a guaranteed path to financial success. #208: Reconnect with Nature: Dive into Jessica Mann’s Transformative Novel, "Uplift".

Meet Jessica Mann I have loved creative writing since I was young, writing short stories and poetry. Uplift is my debut novel.  I have always loved birds and animals, too, and was inspired to write UPLIFT to give them a voice. What if readers could “see” the world through their eyes? And could a compelling, relatable story help inspire greater respect and compassion for these creatures? Nature Being in nature is where I feel most at home, and it has been a lifelong source of joy and inspiration. I have always been curious and enjoyed learning about the natural world, and this led me to become a Master Naturalist, as well as co-found the Teton Valley chapter. Earlier Work I was founder and CEO of Green Futures Unlimited, a sustainability consultancy.  I also taught at the University of California-San Diego sustainable business program. I was Director of Environmental Health & Safety for Pfizer, Inc. where I was honored  to win the prestigious Pfizer Achievement award. I attended the University of Michigan where I earned a MPH from the School of Public Health and a BS from the School for Environment and Sustainability. #207: Unraveling the Secret of a Purpose-Driven Life: Meet Vicki Thomas

Vicki Thomas Chief Purpose Officer – Vicki Thomas won a $100,000 Purpose Prize in 2013 from Encore.org. Nearing retirement, she pursued her purpose using her expertise to help two veteran nonprofits get on the map by placing national and local media stories about veterans needing housing solutions. Vicki always pursued her passion and purpose in life — she is now helping individuals develop their passion to help them develop their purpose. Today many individuals are searching for purpose — Vicki and colleague Joyce Cohen are helping others find their purpose by coordinating conferences, workshops, on site corporate sessions and one-to-one meetings. Vicki helped Purple Heart Homes based in Statesville, NC and Homes for Our Troops based in Taunton, MA gain national critical acclaim by getting stories about veterans they were helping placed in national and local news outlets. She also helped create national programs, and brought in sponsors. Her working career was with the ABC Television Network in New York City developing information about TV show performance using audience ratings to identify demographic advantages and positioning opportunities over competing broadcast networks and cable entities. She was also a marketing executive with the leading national trade association for the nations credit unions (Credit Union National Association) to help increase interest and awareness in credit union membership. Vicki produced, packaged, financed and marketed the Dancin’ Grannies exercise videos and promoted the unknown group to national critical acclaim. Vicki remains an excellent writer and speaker on the ramifications and opportunities an aging society has on business growth and the business bottom line. She also writes and speaks about what is missing in the work place that has so many employees searching for greater job satisfaction. Vicki has no desire to ever fully retire or sail off into the sunset. She is living her purpose. #206: Celebrate the Life and Music of Kevin Barry Price: A Special Replay of Episode 8!

Kevin Barry Price (6/29/54-5/22/25) This replay is a tribute to the music Barry left behind for all of us to enjoy and remember him! Originally recorded on Thanksgiving Day 2020. Our Kickass Boomer of the Day is Kevin Barry Price. After retiring from his regular job, Barry has been spending his time in his studio creating and recording music. In this episode, he will share his journey as a musician, his inspirations in life, and his joy in producing music. As everyone has been saying, there’s a price for everything. Barry will tell us what we need to do to be a successful musician after retirement.  Turn the volume up now and find out why Barry is a Kickass Boomer!  Music was the pulse of Barry’s life. Being left-handed, he taught himself to play guitar by turning it upside-down, which reflects his creativity and determination. This dedication led him to play several instruments, with special enthusiasm for the harmonica, for which he developed an amazing talent. From a young age, he wrote his own songs and played in bands. As an adult, Barry transformed his basement into a recording studio where he and fellow musicians were free to create new sounds and explore recording techniques. Friends and family were invited to participate in the recording process and appreciated the chance to be part of his music. Many local musicians tapped into Barry’s talent for mixing tracks and were welcomed to his home to use his studio and complete their pieces. Barry was a familiar face at local open mics, where he shared his original songs and connected with fellow musicians and music lovers alike. He listened to many genres of music but held a special place in his heart for The Beatles, especially George Harrison, whose spirit and sound inspired him. Barry’s legacy lives on in the music he created and the lives he touched with his gentle spirit and unwavering passion. Rest in Peace Barry! We will miss you!
