Bike Brigade Buddies!

Love love love listening to this podcast. I save Kids On Bikes (recently rebranded as Bike Brigade) for my long car trips so that I can road trip with my friends. These characters are like people that I know and love and get to see (hear) them go on crazy adventures. New episodes make my heart happy. So glad I decided to become a recent patron! Can’t wait for Arch 3!

Promising

This is a very interesting show with a lot of potential for captivation. The game they’re playing is really cool and listening to the show makes me want to play it.

Something about this podcast is starting to wear on me, though: the leeway given to the players. For example, a few times so far (I’m on episode four), one player has used ‘Grit’ rolls to control what other players do, and the DM allows this player to completely dictate the narrative for all characters involved. Maybe this is a bug in the game but this kind of autocratic gameplay simply must be disallowed. Another time, a player rolled to ‘Charm’ a police officer into ignoring pursuing a fugitive, and the DM allowed it and again let a player dictate the entirety of what happens. This sort of thing significantly lowers the stakes of the game and makes it feel a little silly. Again, perhaps this is a bug in the game (which was unreleased as of the recordings I listened to), but the DM either needs to ramp up the DCs for these rolls, or should narrate himself what he decides happens as the result of rolls in a way that’s believable.

I’m going to keep listening for now in the hope that these issues get ironed out. I really hope they do because this could be the next Adventure Zone!

Intrepid kids solve spine tingling mysteries

I love this podcast. The relationships between the characters, the small town setting, the tinge of horror, the intrusion of the supernatural into everyday life; this is very much my jam. Recommended!
