Brazil Reimagined? #8 Brasília, Capital of Hopes and Dreams

Brazil Reimagined? #8 Brasília, Capital of Hopes and Dreams

Capital of Hope, that’s how Brasília was perceived when it was given shape in the 50s. Emerged from the ground in 5 years, the capital was hailed as a modernist miracle and a symbol of modernity in the wildness. For designers, politicians, workmen and citizens, it became a place of dreams, of change, of new times; but also, of disillusion.

For this last episode of ‘Brazil, Reimagined?’ I thought back of this city where I started my journey, of the place where I did my first interviews with people who talked to me about how to reimagine a place; here, through art and poetry. Within the concrete architectural design, they are creating a place under reconstruction: the Brasília of their own dreams.

    Interviews with:
    - Meimei Bastos. Poet, writer, teacher, and owner of the cultural space Caracas Vei in Taguatinga.
    - Cláudia Garcia. Professor at the department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the University of Brasília
    - Marcos Fabrício Lopes da Silva. Poet, journalist and independent researcher.

    Presentation and editing: Nadine Vermeulen

The article in the beginning and names of the streets of Brasília, were read by Cíntia Lemes.

Dubbing by Ani Deal and Parker Deal.

Music included from the beginning to the end: ‘Um Sonho’ by Naçao Zumbi, extracts from the band ‘Calango Careta’, recorded in the streets of Brasília; and ‘Sonho’ by Nego Bala and Elza Soares.

    Brazil, Reimagined? A Historic Win

    Brazil, Reimagined? A Historic Win

On September 21st, there was a historic victory for indigenous people in Brazil, when the supreme court voted against a proposal for a time frame argument to limit indigenous land claims. Thereby, the court blocked agribusiness supported efforts to prevent indigenous communities claiming land they did not physically occupy in 1988.

For this new episode of 'Brazil, Reimagined?' I talked to the people involved in the protests against the time frame argument; to the people who have been fighting for their lands for years; and to the people who are working every day to reconstruct what was destroyed or erased. Forests, cultures, and knowledge.

I went further than I imagined I would go, deep into the forests of Acre, about 10 hours travelling by boat from Mancio Lima, the last town that can be reached over land.

There, I met the leaders of the Nawa, one of the last people in Acre whose claim for land is not yet recognised by the federal government. And I talked to the leader of the Nukini, who is working to recover ancestral knowledge and cultures to reunite his people, and work together to protect their land.

Brazil Reimagined? Nature Now Has Rights Too!

Brazil Reimagined? Nature Now Has Rights Too!

When talking about the reconstruction and reimagination of national environmental policies, Guajara-Mirim, a small border town located in what is perceived to be Brazil’s periphery, might seem of minor importance. Yet, it was precisely in this place that history was written in the beginning of March, when a public hearing was organised to recognise the rights of the Lajé River.

Thereby, Guajara-Mirim became the first municipality in the entire Brazilian Amazon to recognise the Rights of Nature – independently from human interests.

A decision with mayor consequences for the local indigenous communities, whose life depends on the wellbeing of the rivers. And a small victory for nature, who already got her rights recognised the past years in other Latin American countries (Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia).

This episode takes you back to the preparations of this important public hearing, organised by the COMVIDA Committee in collaboration with local communities, and features the voices of those who continue to fight for life in the Amazon across Brazil and Bolivia, despite the difficulties.

    Interviews with:
    • Vanessa Hasson, (lawyer specialised in the rights of nature, founder NGO MAPAS).
    • Iremar Antonio Ferreira (project coordinator COMVIDA, member FMCJS, environmental activist)
    • Erlan Domínguez (representative OCMA, Guayaramerin, Bolivia)
    • Elivar Karitiana, leader Karitiana-people

    Presentation and editing: Nadine Vermeulen

    • Um Sonho by Naçao Zumbi;
    • Apagar o Apagão de Consienciâ, by Iremar Antionio Ferreira
    • Amazonas by Kala Marka

Bienvenues à la House of Serenissima - Île d'Europe (Interview complète)

Bienvenues à la House of Serenissima - Île d'Europe (Interview complète)
