Eight Factors Necessary for Our Democracy to Survive (ep 226)

Eight Factors Necessary for Our Democracy to Survive (ep 226)

Julie looks at a list of factors provided by Academy of Ideas, that relates to whether a democracy can work well or whether it slides into soft totalitarianism.

Academy of Ideas puts forth free markets, division of labor, rule of law, strong families, sound money, effective school systems, and robust media. Julie adds the psychological and spiritual characteristic of moral integrity and self reflection-- so that we understand our own shadow.

    Greedflation? (ep 225)

    Greedflation? (ep 225)

Is greedflation real? In a socialist country the answer would be yes. The greed is allowed only for the powerful elites. And the peasants suffer from the resulting poor coordination between supply and demand.

We listened with frustration to an episode of Stuff You Should Know, in which they blame sellers for inflation in this country and call it Greedflation. The problem was that they were very close to seeing the truth, which is that government printed money causing the inflation to begin with, and then colluded with businesses to control natural competition. The resulting inflation is because of government greed not grocery store greed!

Are the Elites More Willing to Cheat than the Average Person? (ep 224)

Are the Elites More Willing to Cheat than the Average Person? (ep 224)

Scott Rasmussen, speaking on the Daily Signal, revealed that the elites are more willing to cheat than the average person. The "elites" make up one percent of the population, have a higher income and have a post graduate degree. They are influential in government and in the society.

Yet, 69% of the politically obsessed portion of the elites, and over 1/3 of all elites, report that they are willing to cheat to get their way.

We discuss what this means and why this is so important in a libertarian context. The elites believe they know better than the other 99% and so should be making decisions for others. This is in direct opposition to the ideas upon which the country was founded, and the ideas which have been proven to be successful for human societies over and over.

Thomas Sowell and Education (ep 223)

Thomas Sowell and Education (ep 223)

A Dr. Thomas Sowell short YouTube video criticizing our existing education system has generated an extended family discussion. Several questions emerge: Do we have a problem with our education system? Does our existing education system shortchange minorities?

Why is our system flawed, and what is a better solution? Many people have suggested that a voucher plan similar to the G.I. bill would at least give education systems an incentive to compete, instead of relying on monopoly power.

Dr. Walter Williams, another famous economist, has made an inflammatory statement about education, “If the Ku Klux Klan wanted to sabotage black academic excellence, they couldn’t find a tool more effective than the public school systems in most major cities.”

The Movie "Barbie" and Libertarian Principles (ep 222)

The Movie "Barbie" and Libertarian Principles (ep 222)

We examine the movie Barbie from the standpoint of social interactions and libertarian principles. We can conclude that Barbie is a wonderful satire with multiple nuances for consideration. The libertarian principle of personal freedom, and the relationship to the freedom of others, is the most important take away.

Nacho Libre and Bullies (ep 221)

Nacho Libre and Bullies (ep 221)

It seems like the political world never gets tired of scaring us halfway to death. This always resembles a bully in the form of a disease, or a war, or an evil political party that will be the end of humanity.

At least in the movie Nacho Libre, there is a happy ending defeating the bully, and enjoying stretchy pants and a beautiful adoring nun.
