2 Life’s Tough, but Billy Martin is TOUGHER… This Artist and Musician Talks About Living Passion Through Dual Careers

2 Life’s Tough, but Billy Martin is TOUGHER… This Artist and Musician Talks About Living Passion Through Dual Careers

It’s tough enough to “make it” in one creative industry, let alone two!  In the premiere episode of our Life’s Tough… Superheroes Are Tougher podcast, hosts Stephen Shamus and Alex Rae sat down and talked to the multi-talented Billy Martin, artist and musician. They spoke about the challenges and rewards of pursuing success through two career paths.
Billy started his musical career as a senior in high school with the band Good Charlotte.  They worked through the early days connecting with fans and building a solid foundation.  This fan base supported them for the first couple of years, until things really started to take off for Good Charlotte.
For most people, fulfilling that dream would be enough.  But, Billy had another passion… his artwork.  Blending that line between the creative aspects of art and music, Billy is now a featured artist at the Comic Con experiential venues put on by Stephen and Alex of Ace Universe.  He draws for Marvel, amongst others, and has helped develop a line of toys with Hasbro that will come to market soon.
Billy talks to us about being true to your originality and uniqueness while being willing to experiment. He relates that you don’t have room to grow unless you try new things. At the same time, it’s important to remember that without the fans… nothing happens.  You can’t skip steps. You must build that foundation to be successful.
As successful as Billy has been, he keeps his two careers separate and insists that his music and art each stand on their own merits. He remarks that it’s easier to get into the field in both cases than it is to last.  Thus, the importance of evolving.

Life’s Tough, but Harvey Tolibao is TOUGHER… This Comic Book Illustrator is Making His Mark in the Industry

Life’s Tough, but Harvey Tolibao is TOUGHER… This Comic Book Illustrator is Making His Mark in the Industry

His first exposure to comic books was his fascination with his grandmother’s collection.  She had been collecting comic books since the 1960s and had an extensive collection to admire.  When Harvey Tolibao sat down with the Superheroes Are Tougher podcast hosts, Stephen Shamus and Alex Rae, we learned a lot about his journey to success.
You might say he had an advantage since his Dad was an artist and taught him a lot as a kid.  But, at the same time, his Father never wanted him to be an artist and discouraged him from choosing art as a career path. But Harvey’s interest in drawing was hard to dissuade him from, and his talent was undeniable.
Harvey exploded on the comic book scene when he drew the twelfth issue of Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.  Since that time, he has illustrated for many top-tier publishers.  Today, you can enjoy the work he’s done for Marvel, DC Comics, Dark Horse, Zenescope, and IDW… among others.
He’s found great success through his talent and hard work, but his Dad still teases him about being “lucky.”
During this podcast episode, Harvey, Stephen, and Alex delve into Asian-Influenced Superheroes' ideas and the possibility of Harvey creating an Asian character.  Harvey is a Filipino artist, and they discuss the fact that up until now, most superheroes have exemplified American values and culture.
You’ll learn through listening to the podcast that Harvey has a great sense of humor as he tells of the adventures that he’s been through on the way to success.

Life’s Tough, but Toni Domenech is TOUGHER… This Agent Sees the Human Side of Today’s Big Screen Superheroes

Life’s Tough, but Toni Domenech is TOUGHER… This Agent Sees the Human Side of Today’s Big Screen Superheroes

When she came out to California for film school in 2009 and volunteered for a small comic con, our podcast guest did not anticipate her career path. On our latest episode of the Superheroes are Tougher podcast, Toni Domenech sits down with hosts Stephen Shamus and Alex Rae. They talk about Superheroes, Villains, and everything in between.
When she first started attending comic cons and fan shows, Toni noticed a particular attraction for her. She noticed that the shows seemed more interesting when she met the stars and talked with other fans about the shows. She felt a real sense of belonging.
Although she enjoyed working with Stephen for a time at Wizard, Toni left for another opportunity she felt she should explore. In this position, she learned a lot about entertainment law and the legal components of show-biz contracts. It was interesting, but when Stephen let her know about an opening at ICM, she felt drawn to this next opportunity. She worked there as a coordinator for two years, then her boss left.
She was curious to see if she would get promoted into her boss’s position as an agent or if she would be passed over. As it turns out, she got promoted and is still at ICM today!
The career path she took has taught Toni that you have to keep pushing forward… learn to accept failure and keep it moving. The comic con world gives Superheroes a chance to meet with their fans. These artists gain perspective when they can interact and get to know the people who appreciate their work.
As a biracial woman, Toni shares her views on inclusion and diversity in film today. She notes that it’s becoming a time for changes and choices. We are moving towards diversity becoming normalized and inclusion being commonplace, with films like Black Panther and Wonder Woman building substantial fan bases.

Life’s Tough, but Zach Nadler is TOUGHER… This Speaker’s Agent Observes that The Superheroes Influence has Changed Pop Culture

Life’s Tough, but Zach Nadler is TOUGHER… This Speaker’s Agent Observes that The Superheroes Influence has Changed Pop Culture

Before he founded Vayner Speakers and became CEO in 2018, Zach Nadler worked with CAA – Creative Artists Agency. He had an opportunity to work with our host, Stephen Shamus, booking clients for various comic con venues. He sat down and talked with Stephen and Alex Rae, hosts of the Superheroes are Tougher podcast. They spoke about the influence of Superheroes on Pop Culture today… through comic books, TV shows, movies, and live events.
They also touched on the way that social media has connected the dots for this industry. Sharing experiences between fans of the genre has become so much easier and rewarding through social media platforms.
One thing everybody agreed upon – things change fast!  Photo ops are becoming a huge commodity. NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), one-of-a-kind pieces of digital art sold on the open market, are the latest high-value trades, sales, and auction items.
Turning their talk to the comic com shows and the unique experience these shows provide, they discuss the fact that not every celebrity comes to every show. Their advice to fans, don’t “Wait Until the Next Show.”  You may miss great opportunities!
Steve mentioned that superheroes are all around us… ordinary people are doing superheroic things. Zach agreed and said that the people he regards as superheroes are single parents and teachers. He has great respect for these people and the work they do.
