How a Little Bit More Makes All the Difference

How a Little Bit More Makes All the Difference

How can a little bit more make all the difference?

I think the problem that we often face when we set out to challenge ourselves to improve is that we bite off more than we can chew. In other words, we set such high goals and we have such high expectations that as we set out, we struggle to achieve it. The problem isn’t with the end goal, it is with the approach. If you have to take a big step, if you have to make it all at once, then you set yourself up for failure which will lead to getting discouraged and giving up. Nothing is more frustrating than getting in over your head and not knowing how to finish what you started. There is an old quip, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” The idea being that to eat an elephant all at once in one bite is simply too much, but that over time to eat smaller amounts you can accomplish the task. Likewise, there is a principle in God’s Kingdom that when you are faithful with the small things that are given to you, that God will give or entrust you with more. This is not about getting more worldly things or what some might refer to as a prosperity gospel. So, if you want a deeper relationship with the Lord, to grow in your faith, and to experience the fulness of living in God's Kingdom, then the more is Jesus. That is the more we are aiming for and a little push is often the difference between getting close or actually getting it. I want to encourage you that you are not far away from where you want to be. Just a little more will actually produce great results in your faith. Why? Because just a little more gets met with God’s favor and the growth that occurs is exponentially more than what you could ever do in your own effort.

    In this Sermon

We're going to explore what happens when we hunger for knowing Jesus and what happens when we're complacent and stop striving in our faith.

Setting Priorities in Light of Eternity

Setting Priorities in Light of Eternity

    What are your priorities?

What are you living for? What will the summary of your life be? You see all of us have been given so many years to live and none of us exactly knows what that timeframe is.  One day our lives will come to an end and how we spent our days will summarize what are lives were all about. Will your life be defined by your job? Will your life be defined by your wealth? Will your life be defined by your possessions? Will your life be defined by your achievements? Have you ever honestly wondered how people will memorialize you? I think it’s a good exercise. Because we should consider what legacy we will leave behind. Here is the thing though. As Christians we recognize that our lives should speak about our faith. People should recognize that we had a faith in Jesus Christ. While I agree with that concept, I think that this is one of those areas where we are close, but no cigar. I believe that Jesus often is one pursuit among others that we have in life but for far too many Christians He is not the main pursuit. Pastor Bryan and I were talking about this a couple of weeks ago and he related it to a dresser. Is Jesus a drawer in the dresser of your life or is Jesus the dresser to which all of the other drawers get put into? It’s a great analogy and a great question. Either Jesus is something that we pursue amongst a whole host of other things or Jesus is the reason we live and everything else fits in or aligns with Him?

    In this Sermon

We're going to look at how our priorities and especially our attitudes towards what we think is important shape the life we live in Christ.

    Servant of All (Part 2)

    Servant of All (Part 2)

Are you a servant of all?

Jesus called us to be servants when we choose to follow Him. This is not some radical interpretation of scripture, but this was the heart of Jesus himself, that He came to serve us by offering Himself as a sacrifice in exchange for our sin so that we might be reunified with God. One of the greatest goals that we can shoot for is to be like Christ. So, if Christ was a servant and we want to be like Him then it goes without saying that we should want to be a servant as well. We should want to take on the heart and actions of a servant, knowing that in serving others, we advance the gospel and drawn people to Him. Being a servant is not something we choose to do when we feel up to it. It is also not just some lofty aspiration. It is synonymous with being a Christian. To say that we are a Christian is the same as saying that we are a servant and not just a servant, but a servant of God.

    In This Sermon

We're continuing in our series about being a servant and exploring four specific ways that the Bible says Christian servanthood looks like.

Learn to be the Servant of All

Learn to be the Servant of All

    Are You A Servant?

We have all heard the pitches to serve within the local church and a part of how we serve the Lord is in the local congregation. It only makes sense to serve God in the church since it is here where we seek to encourage each other, and we pour into each other’s faith. Church should be a place to give more than just a place to receive.  However, the call to be a servant in the word of God is so much greater than the call to serve in the local church. If we are not careful we may only associate being a servant to the things that we do in church or maybe in how we volunteer in the community and miss out on what God is really calling us to do. We are not called into the act of serving but we are actually called into a lifestyle of serving. The difference may seem like a matter of semantics, but it makes a huge difference in the effectiveness of the gospel if we get it right. So, it is more than just words. We need to understand what God is calling us to when He calls us to serve.

    In this Sermon

We are going to look at three times where Jesus' specifically taught about serving others and how Jesus related success with humility.

    Scripture references

    Matthew 20:25-28, Mark 9:33-35, Luke 6:32-36, Matthew 23:11-12

From Religion Into a Relationship (Part 2)

From Religion Into a Relationship (Part 2)

Does God Want a Relationship With Us?

Last week we talked about giving God everything and not settling into religious motion and activity. We took a look at what it meant to love God with all of your heart, soul, strength, and mind. And here is the thing about that, God is not looking for religious followers, He is looking for people that want to actually get to know Him and that He can know. There is an intrinsic intimacy built into Christian faith that takes us beyond religious expression and into knowing God. It is the very reason we say things like “It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship”. Listen to the heart of Jesus as he expressed a similar thought to the disciples. John 15:15, "No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you." When they had started to follow Jesus, they were merely students, following Jesus to learn from Him, yet somewhere along the way they became friends. And why? Because that was the goal all along. God did not gather them, just to teach them a new religion or to create followers. Jesus was going after something else. What Jesus wanted was a group of faithful men and women who would be able to inherit the kingdom and that didn’t happen just from getting them to do religious stuff it came when they had bonded with Jesus. In fact, it was when Jesus had shared all that the Father had given Him with the disciples that they became friends and bearers of the kingdom and the gospel. You see the knowledge that Jesus had shared wasn’t the point or purpose, was what that knowledge did in the lives of those who received it and what it did was to make normal everyday people heirs of God’s promises and to open up a blessed friendship with the God of the universe. That was the goal for them then and that is the goal for us today, to become friends of God.

    In This Sermon

This week we are going to go a little deeper into relationship and take a look at four specific things that God gives us when we get to know Him.

    John 1:10-13, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Acts 9:13-15, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, Acts 1:8, John 10:28-30
