Human Robotics and the ihmc QUIX Exoskeleton with Mark Daniel

Wheelchair Life to the Exoskeleton, Human Robotics Lifestyle:I began my exoskeleton pilot certification in 2007 at the age of 18. In 2010, I was introduced to the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) where a team of engineers and computer scientists had developed MINA, their first paraplegic mobility device or exoskeleton. Over the last decade, we have worked together to develop hardware capable of mimicking the human gate and necessary software to drive it. We are currently weeks away from testing our 4th iteration exoskeleton, QUIX, as a part of our participation in Toyota's Mobility Unlimited Challenge after we compete in the 2020 Cybathlon later this year. It has been an honor to witness the advances in technology and evolution of handicap sports. In response to witnessing these miraculous achievements, I have spent the past 13 years of my life pushing the limits of the wheelchair that certified me for this opportunity. What I thought would ruin my life has given me more than I ever could have earned on my own two feet.
Quote: How many stairs?Mark Daniel, Pilot
Designer, evaluator, and user representative, Mark was born and raised in Pensacola. As a young adult, he graduated high school early and pursued a career in ironwork. First going to trade school for diesel mechanics, then learning how to weld and fabricate. In 2007, at eighteen years old, Mark started his career and began planning his next steps. Working long hours in risky conditions was exciting at first, but after five months the work took its toll. He fell asleep driving home, flipping his SUV several times, and awoke in the ICU of a local hospital. After learning of his paralysis, he set out to regain his independence.
In 2010 Mark evaluated IHMC's first iteration exoskeleton, and again in 2013 for the second. In February 2016 he rejoined the team as a research intern to evaluate the third iteration and prepare for the Cybathlon. Mark placed second in the Cybathlon, winning the silver medal. Since the Cybathlon he has taken on the American Discovery Trail, which covers 4,834 miles from the Atlantic coast in Delaware to the Pacific in San Francisco.

11:45 - Accidents come along. From the outside looking in, even in my position at the moment, looking at the situation that I was in, it seems like a huge detriment for me. 18-years-old, just starting my adult life, then for the accident to happen, have to restart and figure it all out all over again. But you know, I'm 31 now, it'll be 13 years in October, and, and really, looking back at the situation, it couldn't have come at a better time. I say that at 18 years old, I figured out my life, I had a career plan, I was on that plan, and I was moving forward. But I mean, really looking at the experiences up till then I grew up riding dirt bikes, go-karts, four-wheelers, skateboards, bicycles, running through the woods, fishing, hunting, you know, the good, healthy, youthful adrenaline life.
20:00 - In 2010 and I met all of the engineers and everybody working on the project. There were so many different engineers, interns, and all that have worked on the project in and out, but we really just have an awesome team here. I've been graced to work with them all really, I mean, all the people that I work with here, there's Tyson in the glasses there on the right, Peter on the left,

05:15 - Life is beautiful. It's like, even in the midst of a pandemic, I'm like, we are in our version of the Great Depression in the early stages of our generations only experience with this, hopefully. It's a chance to remake ourselves and a chance to put yourself in awesome different places, to go and remake yourself. That's why we're here. I've been in the process of remaking myself for a couple of years and it's a fun, beautiful adventure.
10:00 - We wrote it in two months and another partner, a co-writer, I'm the lead author on it, but we created it together. It's got to go through editing and get the book cover design this month and we already have got a publisher signed off on it.
20:00 - I've sold off and got rid of about 10 real estate properties that I owned in the last three years.
30:00 - The principles are still true for business. How do you serve a customer? Well, you figure out what their needs are and what started happening three or four months ago may have moved the needs. It's like the fish were over in this hole, and now they're over here.
41:00 - I am doing podcasts a lot today and much more recently. I got asked, do you have more podcasts planned for this trip? Or is this bad timing? I'm going to launch my own pretty soon too. This time in Mexico is kind of a mix of a work-play trip. This is almost like a focus work trip. My wife is finishing up the book that we're writing together and then she's got another book she's writing too. Then I'm gonna write some other stuff and I got a big mastermind coming up. So we had our true vacation in Alaska, where we were not plugged in, we were in a little fishing cabin that didn't even have internet. No TV in that sucker.
46:30 - You're 100%. I think that your friend gave brilliant advice. There is a different energy level and mindset when you're not as outcome-focused. As you mature in business, as much as you are process and learning focused, things will shift. If you look at Elon Musk, now you have a certain level of confidence that you're going to figure it out. Elon Musk one day tweets on his way to work, so frustrated by how long it's taken him to drive, 13 miles from his house to Tesla and SpaceX. So he's like, I'm tired of this. I'm good. I'm free. I'm going to start another company. I'm gonna drill holes under California and build a network of tunnels.

Our Final Words of the Show:Claim your power is a two-fold process. I take people through it, where we release the old identity that is holding us back and take hold of the new. You almost have to shed that old before you can grab the new. Alright, so we release and shed that old idea, take hold of the new, more powerful version of you. So for me, my old identity, my weaker

    Timestamped Show Notes:00:30 - Introduction
10:00 - I tell them that in my marriage, I was a workaholic. I focused on work single-mindedly. When we are overly focused, and a lot of men do that, we just ignore all the other areas. Very quickly, all those areas, start to deteriorate, including our relationships, health, and our friendships. They all need our attention. That's the point because our life is exactly that, it is everything is intertwined. It's just like our body. It's a feedback system. When we smile, we feel good. So it's a feedback loop.
19:45 - You know, like the very first one I think I started with is people actually come into a relationship not to give, but to get.
25:45 - Just a quick reminder, I am very big on this tip that I mentioned before, which is being missed by many. The value of having to have enough space is very important. The other thing is actually making sure that you have those daily intimate moments. Hugging, kissing, holding hands, these are all important and I recommend to them on a daily basis.
30:00 - Another thing is being creative, really looking for ways to maybe scan your laptop and then go work outside for a few hours.
41:00 - For me, the important part of coaching is accepting the person as they are. I'm not there to change them, if a guy feels happy by being addicted to porn, that's not necessarily my job to change him and to try to improve him in a way that I see things. Going back to your original question about the system that I use. My general idea is that I pursue using that system by setting goals and going into specifics about each goal that is to help the person achieve what they want. So for example, let's say a guy is addicted to porn, and at the same time, he wants better results in his career. I might think that these are both areas that we need to work on. He might think that he only needs to work on the career thing and if he wants that, I will help him with the career thing. I won't even engage in porn addiction because, again, it's not my job to "fix" people.
51:00 - Fail Forward, there is, this is one good statement. The general idea is to be able to start with the very worst version of what you want. But as long as it works, if it works, it's fine. Like, start with a draft.
    53:25 - Final Words Shown Below…

Our Final Words of the Show:We talked about all those different life areas, life zones, and relationship is one of them. So for example, if you spent eight hours working every day, so we spent eight hours on your career, the area of your career, you can't put any hours into your relationship. I mean, maybe you need to put some hours into the relationship area as well. It requir

    52:30 - Final Words Shown Below…

Our Final Words of the Show:I think that what you're telling people is the right message. You are responsible for your own condition, that 98%, but 100%. So you see people from all levels of society, from all areas of the world, and some people decide that I can make my life because I decided to do it. Some people decide that I'm a victim, and everyone else is responsible for my condition. If you want to be happy, the second one doesn't work. You know, hard work and keeping your moral code in play, surrounding yourself with good people, and having a purpose for your life, whatever it is. But it ought to involve helping someone else or somebody else.
If you can live toward that end, you can enjoy the time that you have here and feel like for whatever purpose you were put here, that you did it. I think that the image I always have for myself, is I've been informed that at 120 years old, I have one hour to go and I am able to look back and reflect on my life. Did I do what I did and did I accomplish what I set out to do? Also, were other people glad that I was here and I did it. If you can answer those questions, there is a piece for yourself, no matter what's coming, you're going to be okay. If you're at that and you can assess that right now, then you create your own tomorrow so that you can decide. You can decide if I could be a little bit better here, I could have done that, or I've always wanted to do that.
Tomorrow, you can decide to do that. Write it down in your goal book and look at it every morning and figure out if I want to end up here and if I'm here now. What are the steps to get there, maybe I need more education, maybe I need more influence in this area, maybe I need to mee

11:00 - You've got it and it brings us to connection. That's the connection of fire with the earth. It is regenerative, it is restorative and Mother Nature is built in. She's an amazing engineer. Like she's gonna kick our butts every single time if we think we can best Mother Nature. We are whistling dixie because we are unconnected with the truth of the fact that this earth and it is way more powerful than us. So it's being connected with what is. Here's a story I would illustrate it with from years ago. I attended a sheriff's academy in Ames, Iowa. I applied and I took it and it was fascinating Scott because what do you think I knew about being a sheriff? Most American's don't know what the role of Sheriff is.
19:30 - Marketing is communication. Marketing is connecting. It's finding out who are your people, where are they at? How do they want to be communicated with, what is their rhythm? What's their style? What's their desire? What do they think they want? What do they know they need? That's the engagement of connection and when it hits, Whoa baby, it's magic! Yeah, like a full blast, let's go. But when it's not connected, when you are struggling, when you're forcing jokes, when you haven't honed your craft, I also delineate very much between public speaking and professional speaking. There's a huge difference.
30:00 - Right now week to week, things are changing, it actually feels like day-to-day. You can have this great client who has been abused, who already has 15 flaming plates spinning in the air. They're already thinking, damn, I just need another damn thing. So how does she react, how do we help her? People like you and people like me, how do we coach? How do we lead? How do we teach so people can effectively lead their own lives in perpetual adaptation? Look, the world hasn't stopped. Oh, clearly, it has changed in a very remar

10:00 - World War Bunkers. This is a place that still exists and they still find human bones from 102 years ago. It's so surreal that you still have remnants from so long ago because the magnitude of mass destruction is beyond human comprehension when you have millions and millions of people that die in this kind of narrow, 450-mile line called the Western Front. So seven miles north of there, and I didn't, or did I know it at the time, I didn't know a whole lot about what I'm going to share with you now. So seven and a half miles north. This is a very important place out in the middle of nowhere in a farm field, which is sacred ground for America. This is one of the two parts of the Smithsonian show that I'm now part of, at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. So I'm honored to participate in a second Smithsonian show, and it will be up through September 6, 2020, if anyone's in DC. It's the big new Smithsonian Museum near the White House and they took out Oprah's exhibit and put this exhibit in, its' place.
19:30 - I don't know if I'll ever find any more. But it shows us how these heroes felt about themselves and there was a reverence between the white officers and the African American soldiers. It's the opposite of what you would think from a racist South Carolina deep south. Even after the war for 10 years or more, they had reunions and you see letters back and forth and you see respect and love and a passion for this moment in time where they expressed what it was to be an American.
28:00 - So now here's the really interesting part that puts it all together. Why? In fact, when we were talking before the show, you mentioned history repeats itself and people often say this. I say, well, yes and no, because this is not history repeating itself. It's new, in the last 125 years, it sounds like it's an underlying principle that, I guess, has been able to keep going. It's a technology story. We all can relate to how our lives and society have c
