Godspell grew out of the Jesus People movement of the late 60's. The show, composed by Stephen Schwartz with book by John-Michael Tebelak, is structured as a series of parables, primarily based on the Gospel of Matthew, interspersed with music mostly set to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ appearing briefly near the end. It debuted off-Broadway in 1971. Songs featured on our Nashville Hippie Radio Broadcast: Day by Day | All Good Gifts | Turn Back, O Man | Light of the World.
