039 - Myles Alexander of Form & Function Architecture on Doing “Okay-ish” in Asheville

039 - Myles Alexander of Form & Function Architecture on Doing “Okay-ish” in Asheville

Myles Alexander is truly one of a kind. In episode 26, with Holiday Grooms, we mentioned that a gentleman is someone who puts their guests at ease. Myles is a gentleman. While he says that his architecture business is decidedly left of center and "not your mamma's architecture firm" — he shows an endearing appreciation for history and irreverence for tradition for tradition's sake. We think you'll dig this episode.

    Here’s What You’ll Learn:

Myles’ journey to becoming an architect and starting his own firm in Asheville
A behind-the-scenes glimpse of Smoky Park Supper Club’s architectural design completed by Myles (aka the only reason to use shipping containers in a build)
Insight on what it’s like to work with an architect (it's like a marriage)
Inputs vs. outputs (and which to focus on)
Doing what you love versus what other people love (and why you should do what you love)
Tips for smoking meat (from Myles, a champion competition smoker)
Myles’ favorite places to eat in and around Asheville

037 - Hunter Berry, Founder of Taco Billy, on Finding Purpose in Breakfast Tacos

Hunter Berry identifies as a “feeler.” When he left Texas in 2014 to build a new life in Asheville, he ended up taking his own advice. “I always told friends who were leaving Texas to open up a taco shop and spread the good news of breakfast tacos.”

So that’s what he did, feeling his way through the process. The rest, they say, is history —and an interesting one at that. If you want to learn the story behind Asheville’s iconic taco shop, then this episode is for you.

How Hunter developed the Taco Billy name and branding

Great podcast for young Asheville creatives!

I moved to Asheville when I was 18, and I’m 30 now. I’ve worked for 4 different family businesses here. I love hearing MIIA’s fresh take on Asheville culture from a newly transplanted perspective, it makes me appreciate what we have here more and motivates me during my commute to work. This podcast is easy to listen to, interesting and energizing. Thanks y’all!

Sense of Community

My wife, 3 year old daughter, and I are moving to Asheville next summer because we are looking for that nurturing sense of community that seems to be synonymous with life in Asheville. I stumbled upon your podcast while looking for interesting content on the culture of the city. I have loved hearing about your recent relocation to Asheville and embarking on a new life with all of the interesting and creative people the city fosters and uplifts. Being a woodworker and furniture maker myself, I’m excited to be around a community that embraces my talent and skill set. I was also psyched to hear that your favorite brewery was Burial beers. Tim, Doug, and Jess (the founders of Burial) are friends of mine from when they used to all live in Seattle (where my family currently resides). I’m excited to finally see their spaces in Asheville.
Anyway, keep up the great work, and I’ll be anxiously awaiting future podcasts!
