We live in a social/political climate that thrives on making us divided. Changing that will require proximity and relationships, but the most inclusive spaces are often aesthetically uninviting and falling apart. This show wants to change that! Join Rev. Sarah Heath and Josephine Jael Jimenez as they share their dream of moving us from a DIY to a DIT (do it together). Each week they chat with an expert about making space—aesthetically, theologically, socially, etc. This is a show where no church/synagogue/community center closet is left unturned.

On this week's episode, we dive in deep to all things body positivity and food with Registered Dietitian, Natalie Reed! In a culture where only certain bodies have been celebrated, the three of us talk about where we hope to see change through body positivity and the way we view the food we eat. As a RDN, Natalie work with people to help them get healthy, which she reminds us exists in bodies of ALL sizes. 46. Spencer Rose Taylor on Making Space to Speak In Church

    46. Spencer Rose Taylor on Making Space to Speak In Church

This week, we are joined by Space Maker, Spencer Rose Taylor! Spencer is a podcaster over at the Speaking in Church podcast, co-hosted by our very own Josie. Her passion for making space for others comes from her call to ministry and the barriers she’s faced in that call because of her gender. The Speaking in Church podcast is all about Christianity then, now and the future. On the pod, they talk about everything from current events and how your theology informs your responses to them to other hot topics in the Church. It’s a show aimed for deconstructions of all stages, speaking from the lens of the women that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 warned you about.

    45. Savannah Carreno on Making Space for Big Questions

    45. Savannah Carreno on Making Space for Big Questions

This week’s space maker is Savannah Rae Carreno. Savannah is the creator and primary writer for “The Juice Edit” website, and hosts the incredible conversation based “Please Elaborate” ministry. She makes space both online and in person by inviting people to ask hard questions and explore educated perspectives on every topic leaving nothing out as taboo. Online her Juice Edit website is a place she describes as, “where culture and theology collide awkwardly.” In both spaces Savannah creates space for people to question the lenses with which they regard the world whether that be from a cultural or a religious perspective. The conversation goes everywhere from what the heck is clubhouse, why we all need to learn to say “I don’t know” more, and how “knowing” can be an idol. Savannah is a joyfully curious gift to this world and we hope you will enjoy this conversation.

    44. Halleemah Nash on Making Space to Create What Your Younger Self Needed

    44. Halleemah Nash on Making Space to Create What Your Younger Self Needed

This week’s space maker is Halleemah Nash. Halleemah is a proud product of Compton, California – a city that has greatly shaped her ambition, values, and interest in reaching back as she climbs. She is a first-generation college graduate who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Howard University, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University and Certificate in Nonprofit Management from North Carolina Central University. Her resume is impressive working with everyone from the United Nations to the celebrity brand of Kobe Bryant- but her heart has always been in creating spaces for other people to have a chance to be mentored and creating ecosystems that nurture and cultivate diverse talent . All the work she does is as she says “in service to the younger me” being the person she needed as she was growing up. The conversation talks about the importance of representation, the reason why rest is nothing less than Holy, and why sometimes we have to create the thing we most needed.

    43. Peter Lublink on Making Space for Empowering International Aid

This week’s space maker, Peter Lublink, is the executive director of the non profit organization, BethanyKids. The organization helps train surgeons, and makes it fiscally possible for them to serve their own communities in 7 different African countries. The program also helps fund pediatric care for children in those areas. This conversation went everywhere from the need for us to acknowledge systemic racism to the power of movies like Black Panther and the need to not be paralyzed into inaction.

    42. Brenda Marie Davies on Making Space to Be Inquisitive, Fearless, Sex-Positive Christians

    42. Brenda Marie Davies on Making Space to Be Inquisitive, Fearless, Sex-Positive Christians

Often Making Space requires us to step out of the communities and the mindsets we previously held closely. After taking that step out it can be surprising when we discover that wholeness and integration require us to make peace with the places we once had to reject and to share new perspectives and experiences with both our old and new communities. This week’s Space Maker Brenda Davies never set out to become an expert in Christian sexual ethics/ theology, nor when she packed her bags for Hollywood did she see herself becoming a YouTube star, but once she experienced an awakening she ended up becoming both and making space not just for herself but for thousands of other people who weren’t able to find spaces online. She now invites other people to become inquisitive, fearless, sex-positive, free-thinking Christians in the modern world. This conversation is filled with grace and empathy for people who have experienced and shared toxic values.
Content warning- You may feel your own trauma activated by some of the content of this episode- it discusses sex, hook-up culture, embodiment, and abusive relationships. Please listen with awareness, and listener discretion is advised.

Fills my soul

The podcast taught me how to make space for myself once again. Something I must have stopped doing at a young age. It fills my soul.

Breath of fresh air

I love how these women don’t shy away from anything! They’ve created a safe space for so many and I love their interviewing style. It’s the perfect background to a drive or work ❤️

So needed

So needed in this time of hunkering down. Stay in in place but open your mind to make space for dialogue and ideas...bravo Sarah for giving us ‘meat’ to chew on. Thanks.
