MVP109: ”High Conflict” with Amanda Ripley

Amanda Ripley is a New York Times bestselling author and an investigative journalist for the Atlantic, Politico, the Washington Post and other outlets. Today she joins me to talk about her book, HIGH CONFLICT: Why We Get Trapped & How We Get Out
This is a fascinating look at the polarising conflicts of our times - whether it's Left vs Right, race vs race, state vs state, gang vs gang, activism vs establishment or any other conflict rooted in polarity, high conflict destroys relationships, communities and lives. If, like me, you're interested in escaping the "tar pits" of high conflict, you need to check out this interview and the book to go with it.
As a side note, this will be the last regular interview episode of the Managing Violence Podcast. It's been a great run. I will be closing out with one more reflective episode, but this is the final interview and I'm happy to end it on this note. Enjoy!

MVP106: Mary Stevens - Soft Skills in Violence Prevention & Management

    Happy holidays!
I am joined once again by Mary Stevens, an accomplished martial arts instructor and also lead instructor at Violence Prevention & Management UK. Mary is a lifelong learner and incredible teacher, so I took the opportunity to pick her brain about her last 12 months of study which includes seminars with the likes of Richard Dimitri, Pamela Armitage, Dr Tammy Yard McCracken, Rory Miller and me! To compare notes on how each of these world-leading instructors taught their "soft skills" material made for a great conversation.
We also touch on Mary's important work with FairFight, bringing self-protection skills to disadvantaged girls in India.

Great Interviews

I have been a subscriber to Joe’s podcast for a couple of years. I have been fortunate to have not experienced any violence in the past 40 plus years. At the age of 71 yo, I am not nearly as strong, as fast, as agile or as durable as I once was. I have a desire to still be able to product myself, my wife, children and grandchildren. I started training in Krav Maga several years ago but Joe’s podcasts have informed me that learning techniques is only part of the answer to potentially violent encounters. Inspired by his interviews, I have read books on the importance on deescalation (Words of Power), recognizing the potential for violence before it happens (Left of Bang) and understanding the difference between anti-social behavior and an asocial predator (Mediations on Violence). Joe really gets it. He chooses people who are at the very top of their field and is well prepared for each interview. I put this knowledge to the test a few days ago when a neighbor of mine who is half my age and much larger than me approached me in a rage with his dukes up. I was able to deescalate him but was prepared to put him down if needed. In the past I’m certain that I would have let him get to me and I would have shouted back at him and who knows where it would have gone from there. The people on these podcasts are not people who seek violence but they have a plethora of experience in real world violence. This is extremely important to people like me. Keep up the good work.

Solid Stuff

It’s nice to come across a podcast that treats the subject of violence with more depth and wisdom than a general-purpose tough guy telling me that if I don’t take his perspective I’m wrong. Joe has a variety of guests who come at the topic from a diverse spectrum of angles and life experiences. The content is solid stuff. (And I can subconsciously develop my burgeoning Australian accent while listening)

Appreciated

The vast diversity of guests an their experience is greatly appreciated.
