Mourning and Grief In The Age Of COVID-19 with Jamie Sarche

Mourning and Grief In The Age Of COVID-19 with Jamie Sarche

“My calling is helping people be less afraid of death. By helping them to provide their loved ones with a planned and funded funeral or memorial service, they create a path for bereavement, long before it’s need. Truly, I help people live a better, more meaningful life.“
Jamie Sarche, Director of Pre-Planning, Feldman Mortuary

Jamie Sarche is a TEDx speaker, consultant, and the Director of Pre-Planning at Feldman Mortuary.
We spoke with Jamie about how to process death during this unthinkable time of our older, vulnerable population passing away during COVID-19 lockdowns, and family not able to be present.
In this episode we address grief and the ways that we can experience loss in a way that encourages growth. COVID-19 has brought a lot of grief into our lives; from the loss of a job, the loss of rituals, the loss of loved ones, and the loss of our normalcy. Our conversation with Jaime addresses the need to get to a new normal with understanding that our previous ‘normal’ cannot return. Watch this episode to hear about:

How funerals have changed and society is stuck grieving the loss of tradition, ritual, employment and loved ones. These are only some examples of the losses people are facing in the midst of COVID-19.
Grieving is not linear, it does not always follow specific stages. It is the need to ‘grow a new limb.’
There are no right ways and there are no right words. The best thing you can do is just be with someone in their grief and be with your own self in this. We are all grieving.

“Be in whatever the feelings are that you have; fear, anger, anxiety, disappointment, gratitude… Then recognize that we aren’t going to go back to normal. There is no longer the normal we knew. This is true for the death of a loved one and true for other kinds of grieving.“

David Fresquez is the founder and CEO of CareSource, a home care company in New Mexico.
At the age of 22, as he was working his way through graduate school, he walked across the street to a skilled nursing community and said, “how can I help?”
With no knowledge of senior care, just raw motivation to make a difference in the world, David fell in love with the industry and launched his own home care company. Six years later he shares his secret to success.
    In this episode we discuss:

What did you learn as a hands-on caregiver?
What is home care and who uses it?
How is it different than home health?
How have you responded to the impact of COVID-19?
What are the benefits of home care? To families and to our older adults?
What makes you different than other home care businesses?

“Just because the Broncos are playing on Sunday, or it’s a national holiday, our seniors still need help with daily living. Our business doesn’t stop.” ~ David Fresquez, Founder and CEO of CareSource

Why Culture First, Architecture Second In Senior Living

Why Culture First, Architecture Second In Senior Living

“I like to think as an Architect that I’m able to create real homes, meaningful places where seniors can connect and thrive, places that can inspire. I’ll keep pushing to create senior living environments which reinforce connections to our natural communities, whether built, social, or spiritual.” ~Rob Simonetti, Architect, SWBR

As an architect, Rob Simonetti specializes in Senior Housing, and drills down further into person-directed care environments for skilled nursing and memory care occupancies. With 20 years of experience, Rob has expertise in The Green House model creating an opportunity for him to work with some very dedicated and passionate providers of senior care.
    We talk with Rob about:

The importance of culture change organizations to move the bar in senior care.
How the physical environment manifests culture and facilitates the ability of the organization to provide care and meet needs of residents, staff, and organization.
Why, in the age of COVID-19 and future infectious disease outbreak,s the small house model is a natural defense against the spread of infection.

Who does he consider a Maverick in his life? “I’ve always been inspired by Rebecca Priest, former Administrator at St. John’s Home in Rochester. Rebecca is a leader who has the ability to cast a vision for change and bring people willingly along for the journey there.  She pushes, reframes questions, thinks outside the box, and leads from her heart.”

“I am inspired when I see people leading from the heart, meaning whatever action you are taking, it is being taken for a person, for an elder, a caregiver, a family member.” ~Rob Simonetti, Architect, SWBR

Improving Payment Processing for Long term Care Residences

Improving Payment Processing for Long term Care Residences

“Families love being able to contribute easily to mom or dad’s bill, and communities love the ability to offer credit card payment options that don’t cost residents’ an arm and a leg!“

The Mavericks talk with Trevor Gavin, Chief Growth Officer, CareGrove.
Communities want to be able to offer credit cards, but the cost has always been an issue. The majority of people pay all of their bills through a portal and would like to have the same experience for Senior Living. So CareGrove created software specifically for our industry to solve the payment issues that communities have been experiencing.
Watch this episode to hear about:

COVID-19 will forever change the way we think about handling checks and cash. We need to automate that process by having contactless payments. We need it for cash flow, control, hygiene, revenue, etc. The entire world is changing as it pertains to contactless payments. Senior Living is no exception.
Residents need choices and options for how they pay for their care. Many residents have other family members who assist in paying for their care. Some of which live in different parts of the country. By having an online portal it makes it much easier for families to manage the payment experience for their loved one.
Online payments are a way for communities to save money, increase revenue, reduce bad debt, and free up their AR/finance teams. Too many communities spend time manually entering payments manually.
