Short Story by Nicky - Asked us to look at her life and cry

The story about a childhood growing up in filth and squalor in her mother’s hoarded house was just devastating and disturbing and so difficult to listen to. And I did cry for you Nicky. i hope you have safety and security in your life now. Thank you, Paul, for making a safe, loving space for Nicky to share her story for us to witness.

Beyond a podcast, a hug for your earhole

Paul Gilmartin does the careful job of bridging the gap for people in that moment that they are just fumbling for some kind of hope, helping them to finally garner the bravery to reach out for professional support. Between his fatherly-type warmth and bubbling humor, he navigates some very tricky and shockingly naked letters from his readers giving them a pass with such a tenderness that I could have never predicted from a comic. He navigates these letters and topics so gingerly - witnessing his audience members in their pain and allowing it to be seen and sit with all of us - before gently nudging them towards the mental health professionals that outweigh his expertise. And the experts he has on his show bring a wealth and depth of knowledge that he generously steps aside in a way to allow. I particularly appreciated the episode on Attention with Dr. Amishi Jha where she goes deep into the workings of how we use the “flashlight” of attention on those things we focus on and sheds light on why it is also sometimes so difficult. Fascinating! This podcast manages to surpass what you think a podcast is supposed to be, and becomes instead something of an earhole hug, a hand on your shoulder, a virtual group therapy session, a space of empathy, transformation and hope.
