Outdoor Magazine is Michigan's premier outdoor radio show. The three hour program is hosted by veteran outdoor broadcaster Mike Avery. Each week Mike talks with outdoor experts and industry leaders about the latest techniques, strategies and equipment, as well as the latest hunting and fishing news. Avery also has tips and suggestions on where to go and how to get the most from your next outdoor experience.

    We wrap up the month with some great guests this week. First, Kris Duerson of Rapid River Knives talks about all the exciting projects he has in the works. Then, Nick Buggia from the Michigan Wildlife Council has an update on their “Here for Generations” campaign. Hour two features hunter and audiologist Dr. Mike Stewart. Mike talks about shooting and hearing loss. Steve Windom of MUCC then describes why membership in that organization is so important. Treestand safety is the topic in hour three as I talk with Jerry Wydner from the Hunter Safety System company. We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great recipe.

    We kick off this week’s Outdoor Magazine radio show with Glenn Duncan of Duncan’s Outdoor shop in Bay City, Michigan. Glenn talks about my recent experience with sighting in a rifle with a new suppressor. Then Scott Szfranski from Linwood Beach Marina talks about the great fall fishing and winterizing your boat. Tom Campbell of Woods-n-Waternews wraps up the hour. Tom Nelson from The American Archer TV show kicks off Hour 2 this week. Tom has great advice on last minute prep for the upcoming bow season. MUCC’s Justin Tomei is up next with the latest from Lansing. Michigan DNR Officer Ken Lowell then answers this week’s “Ask Avery” question. We’re talking Michigan elk hunting in hour 3 with guide Vance Gawel. Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar finishes the show with a great bear recipe.

    Walleye angler Jim Hoppe is my first guest this week. Jim talks about casting for fall walleye in rivers and on pierheads. Then Ken Dalton of the Michigan Pheasant Hunting Initiative talks about an event coming up in a few weeks to encourage hunters to get back into small game. Hour two kicks off with Rob Miller. Rob has great advice on using dogs to recover fatally wounded deer and bears. Chad Fedewa from the Michigan DNR is up next to talk about the Michigan elk herd and the state’s elk hunt to control that population. We’re talking with Jerod Gashe of Poor Boys Guide Service in Hour 3. Jerod describes bear hunting with hounds and why that tradition is strong in Michigan. The show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time, one last goose recipe.

Then, Jason Garvon from the Michigan Wildlife Council describes a slight change in direction for their “Here for Generations” campaign to promote hunting and angling. Hour two kicks off with Harry Howland from Maniac Outdoors. Harry talks about using mock scrapes and licking branches to attract deer. Steve Windom of MUCC is up next with an update out of Lansing. He also talks about the importance of membership in that organization. Hour number three features Jeff Poet from Jay’s Sporting Goods. Jeff describes a recent musk ox hunting trip to Greenland. He also tells the story of Jay’s and what the future might hold for that Michigan based Outdoor Superstore. We wrap it all up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar. This time it’s a goose recipe.

Then, “Michigan’s Meterologist” Mark Torregrossa talks about why some trees are already turning color and the outlook for fall. Hour two features Chad Stewart of the Michigan DNR. Chad has info on EHD in the southern part of the state and we also talk about changes in deer hunting regulations. Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Water News is up next with details on their big Outdoor Weekend coming up in Imlay City. Commercial fishing is the topic in Hour 3 as I talk with Tod Williams of the Bay Port Fish Company on Saginaw Bay. The show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great recipe. This time it’s salmon.

    Johnny Bowler, AKA the “Bear Whisperer” is my first guest this week. Johnny talks about bear hunting in the Upper Peninsula and what he’s learned in more than thirty years of guiding. Tom Jenkins is up next with details on the unveiling of a new Fred Bear statue in Grayling on September 7th. We’re talking early season goose hunting in Hour two with Glenn Alfieri of GK Calls. MUCC‘s Amy Trotter is up next with a wrap up of their summer youth camp. Corporal Ken Lowell of the Michigan DNR wraps up the hour talking about the Michigan hunter safety program. We switch gears and talk fishing in Hour 3 with Mark Romanack of Fishing 411 TV. Mark talks about making the transition from summertime fishing to fall. The show wraps up with Chef Dixie Dave Minar and another great salmon recipe.

Michigan DNR Fisheries Biologist Jeremiah Blaauw is up next with details on the state's fish hatchery system The Ask Avery segment wraps up the hour, this time with a question about the radio show. We're talking fishing in Hour 3 with Lance Valentine of Teachin Fishin. Lance says this is the "definitive discussion" on forward facing sonar. We wrap it all up with Chef Dave Minar. This time, it's a very nice salmon recipe.

    Eric Long of Long Line Charters is my first guest this week. Eric talks about fishing Lake St. Clair in the fall. Then Tom Campbell from Woods-n-Waternews has a preview of their upcoming Outdoor Weekend. Hour two features Tim Roller. Tim was one of the anglers who pioneered the technique of casting crank baits for salmon in the river. UP farmers Andrea and Kevin Kalnbach are up next with the story of losing several sheep to coyotes or wolves. Mike Seedorf of Comparative Bucks of Michigan wraps up the hour and answers this week’s Ask Avery question. Tom Nelson of The American Archer Tv show kicks off the final hour this week. He has great advice on getting ready for the upcoming hunting season. Wild game chef Dixie Dave Minar wraps it all up with another great catfish recipe.
