A Prayer for the New to Come

A Prayer for the New to Come

“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19).

Mary the mother of Jesus, began to store up her experiences with Christ and ponder them in her heart long before she knew what he would do for the world. She didn't know that she would be able to live with resurrection power because of her son, but she chose to hold on to what she knew and ponder it.

A Prayer for Seasons of Sacrifice

A Prayer for Seasons of Sacrifice

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

John 3:16 is probably the most well known bible verse of all time. Children memorize it. Street corner preachers put it on signs. Quarterbacks write it on their eye black. Most of us can easily rattle it off without giving much thought to its meaning. God loved us so much that he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save us from death and give us eternal life. A Christian friend once told me that motherhood is a season of sacrifice. As moms, we set aside many of our own desires to nurture and care for our children. But the sacrifices I make pale in comparison to the sacrifice my savior made for me.

A Prayer for Being a Living Testimony

A Prayer for Being a Living Testimony

“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the son of man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are Christ, the son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven'" (Matthew 16:13-17).

In order for us to be a living testimony, one that will point others to the character of our father, we must get to know him by immersing ourselves in his word. The Bible is not a book about us, and it is not a book of answers and applications for us to read and apply to our personal problems. It is a book about God, his character, and how he works in the lives of his people.

    A Prayer for God's Mercy

    A Prayer for God's Mercy

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin" (Psalm 51:1-2)!

On the cross, Christ absorbed all the sin of the world into his own body. Like a sponge, he soaked in every iniquity from time past to time future. As a covering, Christ stands between US and God, so God no longer sees our sins, but only Jesus. Our sins are covered, blotted out. Washed away.

A Prayer for God to Shield Us

A Prayer for God to Shield Us

“But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head" (Psalm 3:3).

In a time of danger, David believed in the power and desire of God to be the shield he desperately needed. The opposition said, “there is no salvation for him in God,” but God's peace proved them wrong. How have you experienced unfairness or disgrace? What would you say to God the shield if you confided your need for protection to him? What would it take for you to lay down and rest in total peace?

A Prayer for Being Slow to Anger

A Prayer for Being Slow to Anger

"Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly" (Proverbs 14:29).

The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. It doesn't even produce godliness in our kids. In fact, this week's passage tells us that when we rush to anger, we are exalting foolishness. Uggg. You know what it looks like. You've got a busy day planned, but if everything goes right, you can get it done. Your 11-year-old picks just that time to have one of those preteen meltdowns. He or she starts throwing around accusations. "You don't love me. You don't care about me. You don't understand me!" It's hard not to lose your temper.
