Saturday 13th, April, 2024: Damien Patterson, Policy and Advocacy Officer, Council to Homeless Persons
Janet Jukes and Macca talk to Damien Patterson, Policy and Advocacy Officer, Council to Homeless Persons
Council to Homeless Persons (CHP) has called on the Victorian Government to fund safer housing solutions for transgender and gender-diverse Victorians experiencing homelessness, in
the upcoming state budget.
In its budget submission, Victoria's peak homelessness body highlights the urgent need for dedicated crisis and transitional housing facilities, alongside research and practice
development.
For just $15 million over four years, the government could make an enormous difference in the lives of transgender and gender-diverse people.
The submission calls for:
● $5.3 million in construction costs for a dedicated crisis-transitional housing facility
specifically
● $4.7 million over four years to run the facility
● $5 million over four years to be invested in research and practice development tailored
to the unique needs of this group -
Saturday 13th, April, 2024: Dr Louise Richardson-Self, Senior Lecturer Philosophy & Gender Studies, School of Humanities, Uni of Tas; ‘Gender is not a Threat’
Macca and Janet talk to Dr Louise Richardson-Self, Senior Lecturer Philosophy & Gender Studies, School of Humanities, Uni of Tas; ‘Gender is not a Threat’, about a recent article Dr Richardson-Self published recently.
Gender has assumed terrifying, phantasmagorical proportions for a diverse range of groups today. It has become an “overdetermined” concept, “absorbing wildly different ideas of what threatens the world”, writes American feminist philosopher Judith Butler.
Gender-critical feminists are concerned that male predators will be allowed into women-only spaces. For the Vatican, the traditional family will be ruined and children are now vulnerable to “ideological colonization”.

Saturday 13th, April, 2024: Aiv Puglielli, Victorian Greens, North Eastern Metropolitan Region, State Parliament Update
Macca and Janet are joined live in the studio by Aiv Puglielli, Victorian Greens, North Eastern Metropolitan Region, as they discuss:
Drug harm reduction:almost a year ago the state government received a report from Ken Lay (former police chief) with advice on whether to set up a second safe injecting room in the CBD. To date the government hasn’t released or acted on that report, they’ve just sat on it. However, this week the media got wind of what the report contained, which included a recommendation to set up a second room in the CBD. Aiv can speak to this, and can also provide an update on our campaign to set up pill testing in Victoria.
State Budget: Currently on a parliamentary break but when we return at the beginning of May the state government will hand down its State Budget. The Greens are calling on the government to use this Budget as an opportunity to address the cost-of-living crisis. By introducing a levy on the big banks we could raise more than $10 billions dollars in the next decade that could then be spent on things like building more public and affordable housing, genuinely free public education and cheaper metro public transport fares.
Parliament dress code:For a lighter one, The Age just ran a story about some of the MPs in Parliament (including Aiv) who go against tradition when it comes to what they wear when at Parliament. Aiv talks about why he dresses in a more fun/casual way, and why it’s important to send a message to younger people that politics is for everyone, and not just older men in stuffy suits yelling at each other across a chamber. -
