We are two Afro-Latin PhDs taking an anti-racist approach to center the contribution of Black people and culture across Latin America, the Caribbean and their diasporas through dance and music. Our work aims to:- educate consumers of Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean culture on its Black roots- highlight the work of Black artists, dancers, and scholars across the Americas- develop a practice of anti-racism in the Afro-Latin dance scene 🇵🇷 🇨🇴

    Hola Mix(ed)tape listeners! Today we'll be listening to Bruca Maniguá, interpreted by Ibrahim Ferrer with Buena Vista Social Club. In Bruca Maniguá, Cuban composer Arsenio Rodríguez writes about the existential need of a black man for his freedom. We’ll contextualize the song with the help of two incredible guests: Mel Semé, the artist who interprets Ibrahim Ferrer in the Buena Vista Social Club musical on Broadway, and professor David García, who has done extensive research on Arsenio. In Bruca Maniguá, Arsenio brilliantly uses the common practice of stereotyping black characters to flip the script and, instead, present a dignified black character proud of his ancestry, aware of his exploitation, and who demands his freedom. Musically, the song is characteristic of Arsenio’s afro-cubanos, with an initial tango-congo section followed by a montuno, which Arsenio is the creator of.  Were we listening?    We hope this track helps to add value to your listening and awareness in your dancing! En Bruca Maniguá, el compositor cubano Arsenio Rodríguez escribe sobre la necesidad existencial de un hombre negro por su libertad. Contextualizaremos la canción con la ayuda de dos invitados increíbles: Mel Semé, el artista que interpreta a Ibrahim Ferrer en el musical Buena Vista Social Club de Broadway, y el profesor  David García, quien ha hecho extensa investigación sobre Arsenio.  En Bruca Maniguá Arsenio usa astutamente esa práctica común de estereotipar a los personajes negros para cambiar la narrativa y, en cambio, presentar un personaje negro dignificado, orgulloso de sus raíces ancestrales, consciente de su explotación, y quien demanda su libertad. In this song el gran Maelo describes the murder of a black man with thick lips for the simple fact that he's black and has thick lips. While the lyrics question the motive for the murder, the song distracts unsuspected listeners who stand on the edge between oppressing anti-blackness and the up-beat tempo of salsa music.  As a special guest we have Nicole Ahima from Nashville Salsa Dancing who shares with us a reflection inspired by the song.     Hola Mix(ed)tape listeners! I know, it's been a while.... but believe, I just had some things to sort out. Today we'll be listening to Salsa & Choke by ChocQuibTown. While ChocQuibTown is a hip-hop band, in today’s song they celebrate a different rhythm called Salsa Choke. The chorus of the song reveals a historical reference, Salsa and Choke are separate rhythms and are the main influences of Salsa Choke. The latter, choke, is closer to something like regueton. Both rhythms were common in the town of Tumaco, a southern town in the Pacific Coast of Colombia, whose population is estimated to be 85% Afro-Colombian as of 2023. The first fusions of salsa and choke that created salsa choke are said to have happened there in the mid 2000s. Pero aquí estamos de vuelta y hoy estaremos escuchando la canción Salsa & Choke de ChocQuibTown. En Salsa & Choke ChocQuibTown celebra un ritmo diferente llamado Salsa Choke. El coro nos revela una referencia histórica. La salsa y el choke, las influencias principales de la salsa choke, son ritmos diferentes. El choke uno podría decir que se parece más al reggaetón. Ambos ritmos son escuchados comúnmente en la ciudad de Tumaco, una ciudad al sur de la costa pacífica colombiana cuya población es 85% afrocolombiana de acuerdo con el censo de 2023.
