The month of May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. During the month of May, the Moana Nui Podcast will host four panels to discuss various topics. Hula is the heartbeat of the people of Hawaii. On this panel, we will approach this conversation from different angles and perspectives, from multiple generations and diverse teaching experiences both in and outside of Hawaiʻi. Our panelists help us to understand the kuleana (responsibility) that comes with preserving and perpetuating our cultural practices and the dangers of appropriation when this sacred responsibility is not handled with care, honor, and respect.Interact, comment, and engage with our conversation with our panelists:• Hokulani Holt-Padilla - Kumu Hula• Kanoelani Davis – Kumu Hula• Michelle Manu – Kumu Lua• Leialoha Kaʻula – Kumu Hula

Priced Out Of Paradise - How Native Hawaiians Are Forced Off Their Homeland

Priced Out Of Paradise - How Native Hawaiians Are Forced Off Their Homeland

The month of May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. During the month of May, the Moana Nui Podcast will host four panels to discuss various topics.
The first panel is Priced Out of Paradise - How Hawaiians are Forced Off Their Homeland moderated by Moana.
Hollywood and mainstream media puts out beautiful side of Hawaiʻi as an island paradise. While Hawaiʻi is a wonderful place to live, the natives of this land face a lot of challenges in our own homeland that no one ever sees or talks about. While popular films such as Disneyʻs Moana bring more attention the islands, critics have said that films fail to address the actual lives and challenges that Pacific Islanders and the local communities face. It's not all bad. It's not all good. How do we find balance?
    Our Panelists
    * Kawika Hoke: Writer, Director, and Producer
    * Kelly Mackura: Artist and Healer
    * Brad Starks: TV/Film Producer, and Fashion Photographer

Code Switching - Being POC in the Corporate World (Part 1)

In a world which you are expected to fit in a box, many people of color, African Diasporan, and indigenous people have consciously and subconsciously relied on cod-switching to survive in a colonized culture. Some code-switch inadvertently that they will slip into a different language or accent without even realizing it or intending to do it. Most code-switch to survive in corporate and commercial environments for their livelihood.
Code-switching is often seen as a double edge sword that many experience negative situations due to their code-switching or being told that they talk "white."
The Moana Nui Podcast hosts a line-up of panelists to discuss the ins and outs of code-switching, positive and negative experience around code-switching, and how to still be your authentic self in the corporate world.
