Moonshine is deeply intertwined in the stereotypes about Appalachia. It may even be the first thing people outside the region associate with the mountains. Moonshine has been associated with the beginning of stock car racing and is associated with mountain people’s disagreements with the law. Yet, the craft of making good moonshine is an art. We present here some plain talk about moonshine. Included are discussions about making moonshine, transporting and selling it, experiences between the moonshiner and the law, and drinking. The following playlist represents only a sample of the many resources available about alcohol production and use in the mountains within the collections of the Archives of Appalachia.
