The Moral Courage Project is a collaboration between the University of Dayton Human Rights Center and PROOF: Media for Social Justice that strives to shift debate and shape narrative by centering the accounts of individuals and communities with first-hand experiences of divisive issues. Moral Courage Radio is the podcast platform that accompanies our work in other media, which includes traveling exhibits, interactive websites, and print materials. Season One of Moral Courage Radio launched in 2017 as "Ferguson Voices: Disrupting the Frame" and chronicles the first-hand experiences of those who witnessed and shaped the 2014 Ferguson Uprising that followed the shooting death of Michael Brown at the hands of Officer Darren Wilson. Season Two, "America the Borderland," documents frontline defenders on the US-Mexico border, in El Paso, Texas, and was released in Spring 2018. Beginning March 2021, our third season features Water Warriors, fighting for access to clean and affordable water in Flint, Detroit, Applachia.
Beloved Work - Poison and Power (Episode 4)
Women have always lead the way on environmental issues, including in the fight for water in Flint, Detroit, and Appalachia, because of the inherent connection between care for family, for community, and for the natural world.
Blood Memory - Poison and Power (Episode 3)
How do we talk about the way that race and class shape access to water in the United States? Our storytellers in this episode illuminate this question by detailing how their personal and cultural histories drive their work for clean and affordable water.
Toxic Truth - Poison and Power (Episode 2)
In the second episode of the season, we share the timeline of events that lead to the water crises in Flint, Michigan and Martin County, Kentucky. One central through-line in both stories points to how science and knowledge were manipulated and ignored at the outset, but were harnessed by citizens in defense of their own well-being.
Bodies of Water - Poison and Power (Episode 1)
This episode connects environmental health to human health through an introduction to several key voices from the frontlines of the fight for water in Flint, Detroit, and Appalachia.

Lighting the Way - America the Borderland
In the final episode of our season, we hear from fronterizas who show us the way forward -- as a nation -- by committing to what's right, fighting for what they believe in, and making a difference in their community.
The stories that are shared in this podcast are nothing short of incredible. They have flipped my views on their head and made me question my status and privilege as an American who doesn’t have to live in America’s Borderlands. It gives me so much hope that, in the midst of human suffering, there are so many people defending the humanity of those who so often feel denied of it. This is an amazing window into a seemingly different world... everyone should give it a listen!
This is amazing! Good work to this team. Keeping sharing this message.
Can’t wait for America the Borderland to drop! Great work. Recommending to everyone I know.
