Essential listening

I initially found Mr. Brigden and his score review site Films on Wax through Twitter and our shared love for the music of Jerry Goldsmith. As I started digging through the site, it quickly became apparent that Brigden was not only a thoughtful and eloquent writer, but also extremely well-versed in the history and techniques of film and film music. He’s the kind of reviewer who’s interesting to read regardless of whether one agrees with his views.

The Films on Wax podcast is, in my mind, a perfect extension of Mr. Brigden’s brand. He possesses a dulcet yet authoritative voice, and the radio show format serves his reviews and quick impressions well. After all, nothing makes a point better than a carefully chosen 30 second clip. His album reviews are excellent, as are his long-form retrospectives. Mr. Brigden often invites guests who bring their own unique tastes and specializations to the discussion.

All in all, this is a first-rate podcast, and every time a new episode appears in my feed, I get a little dopamine burst of joy.

Top Scores!

Moviedrone is part of my regular rotation. A deep dive into a particular score, host Charlie Brigden explains themes and inspirations that appear throughout a score. As a film score enthusiast, but defiantly not an expert, I get a lot out of this. Recommended listening.
