For nearly 100 years, one family traded influence and held power in the South Carolina lowcountry until a fatal boat crash involving an allegedly intoxicated heir-apparent shed sunlight on a true crime saga like no other. Award-winning journalist Mandy Matney has been investigating the Murdaugh family since that fateful night in 2019. The now-infamous Murdaugh family is at the center of a litany of criminal investigations into fraud, obstruction of justice, the 2021 double homicides of Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie, the 2015 murder of young Stephen Smith, the suicide-for-hire plot of family patriarch Alex Murdaugh (who has since been convicted of Paul & Maggie’s murders) and a vast insurance scheme that preyed on the region's most vulnerable citizens. Matney's podcast, ranked #1 globally in 2021 and 2023, provides unmatched insight into the horrific deaths, botched investigations and newly-uncovered crimes that are all interconnected. Every corner of the justice system seems to be connected to this vile web of deceit, murder and corruption. Later featuring Co-host Liz Farrell, you’ll follow along in real time from South Carolina as their exclusive sources guide listeners on a journey to expose the truth wherever it leads. What if Alex paid Becky Hill to tamper with the jury, so that he could appeal his verdict. She knew better than to chat with the jurors. Maybe she liked Alex and agreed to help him out.

The constant self applauding is really getting to me. Mandy is centering this case around herself. I like when the work speaks for itself and isn’t so sensational. I heard this podcast was going to become a show, and started listening. I know there’s good intent behind this, but it’s coming off just as egotistical as the “bulldog lawyers”. The true sunlight promos feel like a commercial for a cult.
Watch the Netflix series

it’s notsomuch the voice of the narrater, it’s the lack of interest in her storytelling I got thru about 6 episodes and they mostly start with what she doesn’t know then takes about 30min to share a 911 call or a redacted statement from law enforcement that she reiterates what it says; all while making small jabs at other podcasters or “YouTubers” for not being real journalists (but shes doing the same thing… regurgitating info??). Save yourself the time (& the vocal fry) and watch the Netflix series.
Great research!

An interesting story on which the reporter does a massively deep dive. Thank you!
