Summoning Black History in a Mystery with Victoria Bond

Summoning Black History in a Mystery with Victoria Bond

The parallels between the recent unfettered violence loosed upon our nation’s capital by many identifying as white supremacists and the uncountable atrocities historically committed against Black Americans are inescapable. Nor should they be. To explore this moment in American life, Alex welcomes Professor Victoria Bond.

John Steptoe/Coretta Scott King Award winner Victoria Bond is back with the final book in the Zora & Me trilogy, Zora & Me: The Summoner. In this fictionalized account of the childhood of American author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, the Zora and Me Trilogy are mysteries that explore the wonders of childhood and the horrors of coming of age in the Jim Crow South. Join us for a conversation about the origins of the series. Bond's take on current events, why many Black Americans are wary of Covid-19 vaccine, and her approach to writing with a partner.

Sea Monsters, Cryptids, and More with Max Hawthorne

Sea Monsters, Cryptids, and More with Max Hawthorne

Bestselling author Max Hawthorne joins Alex to talk about his hugely popular Kronos Rising series, as well as how he approaches writing from the perspective of a sea monster. Hawthorne also talks about his interest in cryptids like the legendary Bigfoot--which he has seen, up close and personal. You don't want to miss this one!

    Reviews:
"Hawthorne plumbs the depths of horror and science fiction with this tale, the first in his bestselling series...he takes the subject matter seriously, adding just enough factual information to grant it a verisimilitude that works well to heighten the scares and build the tension, chapter after chapter. Perhaps the best aspect is that the characters are not mere stock; they have interior lives, motives, fears, and backstory that make their actions all the more tense--you care about what happens to them. This is a page-turner worthy of your time. Just don't read it on the beach." - Alex Greenwood, Mysterious Goings On

"Batten down the hatches and brace yourself... Hawthorne delivers suspense at a breakneck pace in his terrifying debut." - Ryan Lockwood, Author of Below

Nick Braccia and the Definitive Book on The Sopranos

Nick Braccia and the Definitive Book on The Sopranos

Groundbreaking TV phenomenon 'The Sopranos' was a blend of drama, humor, sex and betrayal, with darkly comic brushstrokes. Airing from 1999 to 2007, it was the story of the Italian-American mobster Tony Soprano balancing his family life with his role as the leader of a crime family, and in 2021, it’s one of the hottest shows on TV. Alex loved it and is ecstatic to welcome Nick Braccia to the show.

Braccia is the author of Off the Back of a Truck: Unofficial Contraband for the Sopranos Fan. This fun book takes you one step further into the world of Tony Soprano and his families, offering an Italian potluck of fresh and fun takes that any true fan can get lost in for hours.

He is a Cannes Lions– and Clio–winning writer, director, and producer. In 2018, he co-created and co-executive produced the horror podcast Video Palace for AMC Network’s streaming service Shudder. While working at the marketing agency Campfire, he helped to develop immersive, narrative experiences for TV shows like Outcast, Sense8, Watchmen, The Man in the High Castle, Westworld, and The Purge. Braccia is a member of the Producers Guild of America.

Always Interesting

This podcast focuses on the different dimensions of creativity through interviews and Mr Greenwood’s personal experiences. The shows are fun and inspiring thanks to Greenwood’s masterful interviewing and storytelling skills. He is fascinated by the people he interviews and that makes us want to learn more about him. His personal story episodes are just as interesting and often as chilling as the best fiction. I look forward to each new episode.
