The Road to Distraction: Distracted Driving and Reducing the Risk

The Road to Distraction: Distracted Driving and Reducing the Risk

In "The Road to Distraction", we delve into the serious issue of distracted driving and its impact on road safety. Each year, thousands of lives are lost and countless more are injured due to drivers being distracted by their phones, eating while driving, or other distractions behind the wheel. As April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, it is a time to regroup and take responsibility for the choices we make on the road. As drivers, we need to be cognizant of the fact that our only job is to drive. Joined by Robyn Robertson of the Traffic Injury and Research Foundation (TIRF), whose mission is to ensure people using roads making it home safely every day by eliminating road deaths, serious injuries and their social costs, we discuss forms of distracted driving, the psychology behind why people drive distracted despite knowing the dangers of it and what can be done to reduce distracted driving to create safer roads for everyone.

Are you sleepy? Get some rest before you drive!

Are you sleepy? Get some rest before you drive!

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has estimated that 1 in 5 traffic fatalities in the US involves driver fatigue and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that fatigue is the probable cause of 40% of recent highway crash investigations, alarming statistics that should concern anyone on the road.
What started as research into oil and gas industry fatalities specifically, Kyla Hagan-Haynes discovered so many of these fatalities were due to driver fatigue crashes, which are fully preventable when we understand the effects and impacts of fatigue on the safety of fleet drivers and take actions to mitigate this driver risk. With more than 20 years experience in public health and 12 years in the space of occupational motor vehicle safety space, Kyla's passion is now applying both her analysis and the oil and gas industry best practices across other industries that could also benefit from driver fatigue management.
