Puritan John Flavel (Triumphing Over Sinful Fear) observed that there are three different kinds of fear. Natural fear is a response to approaching evil or impending danger. While not necessarily sinful, it exists because of sin (it is a result of the Fall). Sinful fear arises from unbelief, which is an unworthy distrust of God. Godly (or religious) fear is described in the Scriptures as the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is both prevention and antidote to sinful fear. Some people say, If you dont accept my choices then you dont love me! Is this actually true? Can we love people and still object to their decisions and actions? This world so desperately wants love and so regularly looks for in the wrong places. While sin deflates love from our world, God sent Jesus into the world bring genuine love to the world. As those who have received Gods love, Christians should be especially loving people. The love of a Christian is a fruit that God develops in His people the outworking of faith in Christ. How does God grow love in us? Why is it so important? What should we do with that love? Today we will look at the life of Isaac, one of the most significant people in the Bible, but a man who oddly has only this one chapter to tell us about his life. There is an ordinariness to his life, and an ordinariness that describes each of our lives even the greatest celebrity. The gospel reminds us that Gods love comes through faith in Christ, not what we do; and even if we change the world for the good, it wouldnt make Him love us any more than He does in Christ. The promises in the gospel are precious to every person who truly receives them. In those promises we have reconciliation with God, restoration to our purpose, and reasons for love and joy. Still, there are many who hear those promises that fail to value them for what they are. Even with the enormous value, they will dismiss them as irrelevant because they fail to see the need. What about us? Will we be the ones that value faith in the gospel or dismiss it? In our passage this morning, we will hear the account of Jacob and Esau and the importance of receiving the gospel promises for ourselves by faith. How will we experience the promises of God?
