    The Labor in Labor Day

Labor Day gets marketed as burgers and one last trip up north, but we want to bring it back to something deeper: honor where it’s deserved, not just observed. Who are the people that kept your world standing when it was inconvenient, exhausting, or unseen? Today we’re naming them, and we’re inviting you to do the same for the workers, caregivers, veterans, business owners, and families whose dedication strengthens our communities. We’re joined by Vito Pampolona, a decorated disabled Vietnam combat veteran and longtime business owner with more than 50 years in real estate. Vito shares what it felt like to come home, start over without formal education, and build a career by outworking everyone in a commission only role. We talk about the kind of discipline that starts at home, gets reinforced in the military, and still shows up in leadership every day. If you’ve ever wondered what “work ethic” really looks like, his stories make it real. We also dig into what makes someone employable and dependable beyond a resume. Vito explains why he asks one blunt question in interviews, why transparency matters, and why technology can’t replace face to face communication when real decisions have to get made. Mercy For Caregivers

Caring for an aging parent can break your heart and deepen it at the same time. When you’re exhausted, under pressure, and doing your best, one sharp comment can tip you into resentment, shame, or that lingering feeling of guilt that says you’re never doing enough. We sit down with Pastor Tim Helland from Creekside Christian Church to talk plainly about mercy, grace, forgiveness, and why these aren’t “extra” ideas, they’re survival tools for real life and family caregiving. We unpack how a divided culture creates endless chances to offend and be offended, and how that constant friction feeds depression and heaviness. Then we zoom in on a different perspective: God is not reluctant to forgive. He looks for the opportunity to forgive because he understands how limited we are and how often we don’t grasp the full impact of what we say and do. That shift changes the question from “How do I keep score?” to “How do I extend mercy without losing myself?” From there, we speak directly to caregivers. Honoring father and mother can mean years of steady support, often without thanks, and usually with real financial constraints since professional elder care is expensive and often paid out of pocket. We talk about how to keep going when you feel depleted, why you cannot pour out if you’re not poured in, and how faith, scripture, worship, and community can refill your strength, patience, and peace. We also reflect on the generational legacy your kids see when you choose to show up. If you know the weight of elder care, this conversation will meet you there. Subscribe, share with a caregiver who needs encouragement, and leave a review to help more families find practical support and hope. What Test and When For Cancer?

When should you start cancer screenings, and how often should you get tested? On this episode of Next Steps for Seniors: Conversations on Aging, Wendy Jones welcomes Dr. Pradhan to break down the most important cancer screenings and what seniors and their families need to know. They discuss screening recommendations along with warning signs to watch for and how family history and genetic risk can impact your care. Dr. Pradhan also explains alternatives to traditional colonoscopies, including FIT, Cologuard, and newer blood-based testing options. The conversation also covers what Medicare provides after age 65, including wellness visits, cognitive screenings, and advance directive planning—and why a Medicare wellness visit should not replace an annual physical. Most importantly, Wendy and Dr. Pradhan emphasize the importance of preventive care, regular screenings, and having a trusted primary care physician to help catch potential problems early and maintain a better quality of life as we age. What If Guilt Is Not Your Burden

Guilt can sneak into caregiving in ways that feel impossible to admit out loud: I’m annoyed at someone who can’t help it, I didn’t do enough, they’re gone and I’m still here, I’m making choices that decide the rest of their life. Wendy Jones sits down with Pastor Tim Helland to name that burden clearly and offer a way through it that doesn’t rely on denial, perfection, or pretending you’re fine. We connect the day-to-day reality of aging, family stress, and power of attorney responsibility with a bigger spiritual question: what do you do with guilt that won’t lift? Pastor Tim points to Luke 23, where Jesus prays, “Father, forgive them… they don’t know what they’re doing,” and explains why forgiveness is not weakness, not a free pass, and not the same as ignoring justice. It’s a deliberate step that breaks the cycle of fear, shame, and blame that so often damages caregivers and families. We also talk about what Pastor Tim has seen through recovery groups and jail ministry: people often don’t understand the full consequences of their choices until the damage is already done. That perspective can change how we process hurt, how we set boundaries, and how we begin to heal. If you’re carrying caregiver guilt, grief guilt, or faith questions around aging, you’ll leave with language for what you feel and a practical next step: forgiveness that moves into prayer. Subscribe to Next Steps for Seniors, share this with a caregiver who needs it, and leave a review so more families can find help when guilt feels heavy. Stressing Over Caregiving

In this episode of Next Steps 4 Seniors: Conversations on Aging, we sit down with Erica Ancel of Next Steps 4 Seniors for an important conversation about the realities of caring for someone with dementia—and caring for yourself along the way. Caregiver stress is real, and it can take a toll mentally, physically, and emotionally. Erica shares practical guidance for navigating behavioral changes, sundowning, and the unpredictable nature of dementia, including Lewy body dementia, while remembering an important truth: the disease may change behaviors and memories, but the person you love still needs safety, connection, patience, and understanding. We explore ways caregivers can prevent burnout, build a support network, make time for meaningful respite, and focus on quality time—not just caregiving tasks. Erica also discusses the importance of hydration, movement, social connection, faith, and the power of simply being a calm, reassuring presence. Caregiving was never meant to be done alone. Give yourself permission to ask for help, take a break, and care for yourself, too. Above all, keep showing up with love.
