    Jesus' Prayer for Unity

    Jesus' Prayer for Unity

The Apostle Paul shared an encouragement with the Ephesian Christians. He said, "Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace." Unity was clearly a priority for the church. But that concept didn't start with Paul.
    ----------
On the night He was betrayed, Jesus prayed in earnest that His followers would have the same level of unity that He and His Father had. Ironically, one of the issues that seem to plague His body, the Church, is a serious lack of unity.
    ----------
We have to work toward re-establishing unity through humility, selflessness, and commitment. If our Savior prayed for unity, it makes sense that we should make the effort to bind ourselves together in peace.

    Paul's Prayer for Ministry Partners

    Paul's Prayer for Ministry Partners

One of the things we learned growing up in the church was the unique partnership we have with missionaries serving in countries around the world. We learned that our financial support (a.k.a. partnership) allows for the missionary to focus solely on the work of sharing the gospel in the country or culture group in which they were investing themselves.
    ----------
While that is a great way to "partner" in ministry with missionaries, we also had and continue to have a responsibility to partner in prayer with missionaries as well as other Christians even within our own church family.
    ----------
It gives us a great opportunity to not only intercede in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Christ, but also reminds of our need for mutual encouragement with each other in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the focus of our message this Sunday as we continue our series on "Prayers from the Bible."

    Believers Pray for Boldness

    Believers Pray for Boldness

As we continue our series of messages on prayers in the Bible, we consider the question: "What does it mean to show boldness as a Christian today?" As we look through the New Testament it is clear that boldness in the face of opposition and even persecution was required for believers. It is a message to consider this week.
    ----------
Of course, we know that there are those that face the same threat as those New Testament Christians, but for many of us, we face very little in the way of persecution for our beliefs and fairly light opposition to our faith in our day-to-day life; at least as it stands today.
    ----------
However, we have seen a gradual shift in the perception and portrayal of those who are considered truly committed to faith and to the Word of God. If we are honest, that "shift" is accelerating more and more. We may not be far from seeing slight opposition move to a more combative form of animosity toward Biblical morals and those who commit to them. The next logical step (as we see in the Scriptures) would be outright hostility and persecution.

    Jabez's Prayer for Blessing

    Jabez's Prayer for Blessing

As we continue our series of prayers in the Bible, we come to one that has been somewhat misunderstood. There are those that might see his prayer as a call to action for God to provide for our material needs and blessings.
    ----------
For a proper interpretation of his prayer, it needs be understood through a spiritually sound focus, not one of materialism. God’s blessings are the real things that produce real effects. We have the ability to pray for blessing... but God is the one who commands blessings.
    ----------
The lesson we can truly focus on from his prayer is that we are to establish and maintain prayer without end in our daily lives. As writer Meg Bucher states, "Jabez was not using prayer as a formula to get something from God; rather, he was calling upon God to help him accomplish the promises of God."

    Paul's Prayer of Grace

    Paul's Prayer of Grace

Praying to God can admittedly sometimes leave us feeling frustrated and disheartened. Many of us, at one time or another, have prayed sincere prayers in the hope of receiving that for which we had prayed--a job during a time of unemployment, healing from a health issue, deliverance from a desperate situation, etc.
    ----------
It is understandable that in those moments where answers don't readily seem to come in the time or way we had hope, we can lose heart and our faith can wane or be tested.
    ----------
Such is the prayer of the Apostle Paul that we will focus on this Sunday. As he prays for God to remove the "thorn in his flesh," he gets a clear message that, for now, God's grace will be sufficient for him to endure whatever suffering this is causing for him.

    Stephen's Prayer for Compassion

    Stephen's Prayer for Compassion

Years ago, boxer Mike Tyson once said regarding his opponents plan to defeat him in a match, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." In short, unexpected developments often throw off the best laid plans.
    ----------
Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves and show concern for our enemies. In truth, that can be our plan... to be compassionate to everyone in our sphere of influence. But, as Mike Tyson warned us, that doesn't always work out when we get punched in the mouth.
    ----------
It can be challenging to maintain a compassionate heart and attitude when the response is apathy, or worse than that, anger or bitterness. Yet, that is exactly the kind of person we are called to be in Christ. Not only did He set the perfect example of this, he provided examples of others who got "punched in the mouth" (actually much worse), and still remained compassionate through their persecution.

True to the Word

I appreciate the preaching and teaching content that comes from this church. I love the commitment to Biblical truths. That is not to say other churches don't do that. It just seems clear that NHCC has made a commitment to make sure the Word of God is not only referenced in the message but the real life applications are highlighted through those biblical truths.
