Expendables 4 (2023) Movie Review
Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham reunite with a new crew after nearly a decade to kick more old-man ass with knives and guns blazing in Expendables 4! The old action hero Suicide Squad is back with a fresh rotation and even more obscure talent to do the job few could accomplish. What’s remarkable is that even after almost another decade, The Expendables is still largely enjoyable if you’re willing to turn your brain off and overlook some glaring green screen effects. Once you’re past the early 2000’s CGI the over-done blood and kills really satisfy in that perfectly “movie cheesy” way (meaning it’s ridiculous as a concept, but seeing the execution was sort of impressive).

Dumb Money (2023) Movie Review
Dumb Money is a crowd-pleasing and frustrating look at the world of stocks and how Wall Street execs try to control the markets to keep the little guys out. Following in the footsteps of The Big Short (though not nearly as detailed and informative) this film smartly pits the 99% against the 1% who seem to have little regard for the rest of the people in this country trying to make an honest living. With seemingly endless bailouts and companies purposefully shorting companies to run them out of business, it feels as if the odds are stacked against anyone trying to find a foothold in the market to accumulate wealth. So, what happens when the 99% decide to stick it to the hedge funds and billionaires and go all in on shorted stock?

A Haunting In Venice (2023) Movie Review
A Haunting in Venice follows world-renowned detective Hercule Poirot to Italy to unearth the mystery of a young girl’s death and a supposedly haunted house! Over the last six years Kenneth Branagh has quietly put together an incredibly entertaining trilogy of Agatha Christie’s works, each film highlighting a different and integral aspect of Christie’s writing. With a smaller and less high-profile cast, Branagh focuses more on the intimate details of the characters and their backgrounds without fear of A-listers all competing for screentime. Branagh continues to perform double duty as director and star, finding more self-assurance in both roles and delivering the most accurate version of Poirot in his tenure.

Bottoms (2023) Movie Review
Bottoms is a hysterical satire of the high school experience told from the perspective of the unattractive and talentless queer students who form a fight club to get laid. While high schools and students have changed over the years, the same anxieties and insecurities forever loom over the next waves of students in an endless cycle. Playing in a very similar vein to the 21 Jump Street film, this film’s particular high school is a hyper stylized one that revolves around its lead football player and his effect on the entire town. Queer kids are no longer bullied for being queer, but they are if they’re considered queer, ugly, and talentless. You can be two of those and get away with it, but never all three as our main characters remark early on.

How To Blow Up A Pipeline (2023) Movie Review
How To Blow Up A Pipeline is an anxiety-fueled eco-terrorist thriller that captures an intense and understandable rage towards corporations responsible for harming the planet with their practices. Based on a novel of the same name written by Andreas Malm, the film captures the anger and resentment that’s fueled by many in our country in terms of how our land is treated and how that adversely affects Native Americans, farmers, and everyday citizens who don’t have the means to move away from harmful industrial zones. Whether it’s air pollution or being pushed off your land because the government wants to run a more convenient pipeline through it, there are real people affected by their environments in awful ways all in the name of profits.

You’ve really found your groove and mission. Each episode takes listeners into movies we probably wouldn’t venture into without your calm, friendly, encouraging companionship to consider these films.
