S3:E6 Day of Caring 365 Foundation and the Old Nerd
Gery Deer sat down and spoke with Hans Marlette, the Executive Director of Day of Caring 365. The Day of Caring 365 Foundation was founded in 1991 to foster volunteerism and provide resources for communities in need.
Day of Caring 365 is a nonprofit organization that has provided funding for food banks and shelters in local communities utilizing volunteers and donations for charity.
We have expanded to include Roberta's pantry which helps to provide hygiene products for many people in our community that do not have access to hygiene items that we take for granted.
Every year the Day of Caring 365 Foundation hosts pancake brunches throughout the Dayton area to raise money for their partner organizations. Last year, they raised over $ 21,000 and 100% of those profits go to the local community partner organizations.

S3:E5 Emotional Polarity Techniques and the Old Nerd
This month our guest on Old Nerd in the Gym is Nick Wilson, a Certified EPT Practitioner at the Better Days Center in Centerville, Ohio.
Nick Wilson is a co-owner of Better Days Center, located in Centerville Ohio and he has been practicing Emotional Polarity Therapy techniques since 2019 when he joined his wife and business founder, Chanelle Wilson.
Nick shares what he and his wife Chanelle do to help people every day. Better Days Center’s EPT practitioners offer children, teens and adults a holistic option to traditional talk & drug therapy. Emotional Polarity Therapy techniques are an alternative to traditional talk therapy and uses many holistic practices including the therapeutic use of magnets.
Polarity therapy is referred to as "energy medicine" because it uses several techniques to influence energy flow and energy balance in the body. Practitioners believe that energy imbalances, disturbances, or blockages result in disease and can be corrected.
EPT has been successfully ending suffering in adults and children in clinical environments for more than 25 years. The immediate result is profound, empowering relief. The long-term result is permanent positive behavior changes, a healthier life and a better world. EPT uses four major steps to forgiveness and healing including focus, find, fix and forgive.
These four steps can release pain from old traumas, forgiveness for self and others and ultimately lead to a more positive happy lifestyle moving forward. In 1993 Annette Cargioli began a new healing initiative in emotional healthcare. Adults and children were coming to see me to heal physical and emotional pain by releasing “old hurt” through forgiveness. She became known as The Forgiveness Doctor and called her discovery Emotional Polarity Technique or EPT. Since that time, She has trained hundreds of people to help others using these EPT techniques.

S3:E3 Hospice and the Old Nerd
For those caregivers dealing with someone suffering from a debilitating or terminal illness, hospice care can be one of the most valuable services to both patient and family. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misinformation regarding hospice so we decided to tackle this difficult subject in this episode of the Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast.
Hospice is much more than "end of life care" for terminal patients. Services range from palliative, in-home, and in-facility care, to grief counseling and family support. There are more than 5,000 hospice organizations in the United States, many of which are not-for-profit organizations.
Our guest for this episode of Old Nerd in the Gym Podcast is Kim Vesey, RN, CHPN, MS, general manager of Ohio's Hospice of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Kim has been a hospice nurse for 37 years, starting into that area of practice only one year out of nursing school.
But Kim isn't just a healthcare professional working in the hospice industry. Unfortunately, she's also had personal experience, going through the loss of her husband and daughter. Her experiences personally and professionally have given her insight that helps families make informed choices while maintaining emotional strength and dignity.
Hospice care is not something arrived at lightly by patients or families. One of the most difficult aspects of caring for his parents was when Gery Deer's family had to make the difficult decision to involve hospice support. In the case of his mother, he had the support of his father, close cousin, and siblings, as well as adult nieces, to make those choices. But when it came time to care for his father, he made that decision alone - and without hesitation. The benefits of hospice care to ensuring the quality of life and palliative support were invaluable. After his father's death, hospice services included grief counseling, vital to dealing with caregiver survival issues like guilt, grief, and depression.
Experiencing loss is challenging for anyone, at any age, but can be especially difficult for young children. Sadness, fear, and loneliness can overwhelm a child who's lost someone close to them. To help grieving children, Kim has written a series of illustrated books, beginning with, "What Cloud Is My Mommy In." Beautifully illustrated by Amy Gantt, the "What Cloud" series deals with the loss of parents, grandparents, and siblings, through the eyes of a child.

S3:E2 Gratitude and the Old Nerd
“Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: It must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.” —William Faulkner
There’s no denying the last 18 months have been challenging for everyone. Gratitude has been something that might seem elusive to a great many people. Strangely, when times are the toughest gratitude is most important.
Many people treat gratitude as something transactional or focused within their religious beliefs but instead, it must be an active part of our day-to-day life. Those who practice gratitude are more likely to feel more positive and even show reduced signs of stress. Gratitude is not just saying “thank you,” but playing an active role in the positive achievements of others - even if it’s small or even unseen.
In this episode of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, your hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth talk about gratitude in some most unusual ways. They’ll get into what it means to practice gratitude, beyond the practical definition of the concept, and discuss where it fits into the lives of the devout and those without religion at all.

S3: E1 - The Vaccine and the Old Nerd
According to the most recent set of data released by the Kaiser Family Foundation (dated August 18, 2021), only 72% of adults in the United States have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. While this is an improvement over some earlier numbers, cases of covid are skyrocketing with nearly 3,100 new cases being reported daily in Ohio alone (ODH). Constant politicizing and the spread of misinformation on the issues of personal protective devices, such as masks, and the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines has led to an increase in the spread of this terrible disease.
A great number of medical experts feel the government tried to bring the country back to "normal" far too soon before the virus had been contained to a manageable level. Cries of personal liberty and economic subjugation forced politicians to bend and ease restrictions, discontinue mask mandates and social distancing requirements, and even urged some legislators to pass laws preventing schools and businesses from forcing the use of safety measures by students and patrons.
On our premiere episode for season 3 of Old Nerd in the Gym Fitness Podcast, your hosts Gery Deer and Julie Barth speak with Dr. Leann Poston, former pediatric physician and assistant dean of the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Dr. Poston talks about the need for people to seek out factual medical information and avoid the politics of the COVID problem to help ensure the safety, not only of themselves and their family but others who may be more at risk.
In this no-nonsense discussion, Gery and Dr. Poston discuss how the vaccines work, dispel many of the myths surrounding their safety and effectiveness, and cover where to find the most accurate, non-political information.
About Our Guest
Leann Poston, MD, is a licensed physician in Ohio who holds an MBA and an M.Ed. She is a full-time medical communications writer and educator who researches and writes about medicine, education, and healthcare administration.
After practicing in a physician group practice for eleven years, Leann taught students at all academic levels, wrote curricula for both medical and business colleges, and served as an assistant dean at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Leann’s writing and teaching experiences have led to several awards in the education profession.
Our appreciation to Dr. Poston for assisting with the production of this episode.
