💅 redefining consistency: the messy manicure method [OHT 087]

This one was inspired by a messy manicure and the reality of progress. Perfection is not a prerequisite for progress. But how often do we keep ourselves from moving forward because on some level, we believe it is? Ex. If I can't write a chapter a week, I won't even write a paragraph. (I don't recommend trying this thought at home.) That is not how that works! Logically we know this. Like batting averages - nobody's hitting 1000 out of 1000. Not even close. If you want to play the game, you've got to be willing to miss sometimes. If you want to have a chance at a hit, you've got to be willing to miss sometimes. I describe the "what we think consistency looks like" doodles - like this one. Progress isn't linear. It's not cookie cutter. It's messy. Consistency is about commitment and continually opting back in. ^^ That commitment and continual opt-in makes our progress as predictable as can be. Because the only way we won't get "there" is if we quit trying. I speak to Jon Acuff's concept of "the day after perfect" - the day we show up after the day we didn't. THAT is where the magic happens. It's where we build resilience and confidence. We get to decide what "perfection" actually looks like for us. Messy manicures and all. 📮 Thoughts? Qs? Requests? 🧊 warm or cold? a playful way to course-correct in the moment. [OHT 085]

This one’s a quickie. Sharing a playful game and pattern interrupt we can use to check in with ourselves: is this action getting me CLOSER to what I want, or further from what I want? Closer = warmer. More fun, more fulfilling, more energizing. Faster. Further - cooler. Seems fun in the moment but actually LESS so. Slowing us down. Making it harder. Once you’ve identified which is true, you get to decide how to proceed from there. Do you want to stop the “cooler” activity? Pair it with a “warmer” activity for a net gain? (In my nighttime scroll example, stopping would mean putting the phone away and closing my eyeballs. Pairing it would mean getting up and pairing it with some steps. Or sharing whatever’s interesting or funny to me with someone I love.) “Cooler” is a flag on the play and an opportunity to course correct. “Warmer” is a confetti popper to celebrate and gift ourselves some dopamine. Give yourself some time for your *Mom Brain* to step in and suggest next steps. 📮 Thoughts? Qs? Requests? Share with me here in the comment box >> onherterms.com/convo ❤️ Loving this episode? 🌋 moving thru resistance (*the floor is lava* theory) [OHT 084]

You want to WANT to do it, but you don’t yet. Or you’d be doing it. On some level, you believe there’s more benefits to NOT doing it. Or you’d be doing it. Have you ever considered the drawbacks to not doing it? It’s like standing on a hot sidewalk barefoot. Standing still and talking about it… doesn’t help! The longer you stand there, the more damage you’re doing. Helpful Q to actually answer: What are you missing out on by thinking about it, and not doing it? By letting your fear dictate your actions and not stretching yourself to be brave?  Ex. Thinking about it and beating yourself up over not doing it is likely more painful than doing the thing. TEST IT and prove me wrong, will you? (Better yet, prove Mom Brain / your wisest self RIGHT – show yourself that taking this action is indeed worth the discomfort and effort, and once you’re going, actually feels pretty dang good.) Give yourself a chance to try something new and TRUST yourself to take care of yourself on the other side. Twinkle toes over to the grass or some shade, at least. This is where it is actually helpful to bake in actions we can take daily - because the automation is useful. We can relax into routines vs. switching things up every day. ***Inspired by this journal entry from 2023: So – what are you waiting for?  What are you afraid of?  Have you considered the pain of resisting the thing is often more intense than DOING the thing? When has that been true? Journaling is cool and all, but have you tried actually doing the thing? Taking the step? Moving your feet? It’s like resistance is standing on a hot sidewalk barefoot. Thinking and talking about it isn’t going to help. Moving your feet will.  Further [yes I said that; who talks to themselves like this?! 💀] – the longer you stand there, the more pain you’ll experience, both now AND later. Bc that burn is changing your chemistry. It’s gonna require extra attention for healing vs just moving right along, knowing and acknowledging the floor is lava and keeping it moving to the next shady spot. 🏰 a shortcut to happily ever after [OHT 083]

If you’re feeling impatient with your progress and wishing you could fast forward, flip to the back of the book, this bud’s for you. Instead of snoozing your satisfaction and delaying (even denying) gratification till you reach your imaginary endgame, let’s try something different. Use that happily ever after to your advantage. Take a good look into that future to see what you expect to feel when you reach XYZ outcome. How can you feel that now? Like a fruit infused water break… how can you add pleasure to the process today? Reel it into the present. Ex. I absolutely do want to finish and share my first book (and many after it!), but don’t feel inspired to work on it in a solo silo. That feels flat and too far removed from the “happily ever after,” because my favorite part is sharing my ideas with you in an organized, cohesive format. I can add pleasure to the process by shortening the feedback loop and sharing behind-the-scenes of my creative process with you here via the podcast. I get to enjoy the magic of conversations all along the way, and BONUS - one day the book will be done! Get what I’m saying? Play with adding pleasure to your process. Find creative ways to genuinely feel more content with the present, and you’re an instant winner. Micro-happily ever afters. Wee wee wee all the way home. 📮 Thoughts? Qs? Requests? 🌪 the habit vortex: building up to high-stakes habits [OHT 082]

Let's talk about the power of a habit vortex. (Sharing more mixed metaphors with you in this one.) Pour out all the puzzle pieces of habits you'd like to try and experiment with. Notice the ones you feel the most emotional attachment to. (There's likely a lot of resistance to those too.) Start with the small-stakes moves. As you build your trust, energy, and consistency muscles with these, you'll likely notice the higher stakes habits start to move into your peripheral vision. Like if you're at a bar or restaurant visiting with someone and you notice [your bestie, sister, partner, or somebody cute who catches your eye] and starts walking your way. The best way to stay in the zone is to focus on the person right in front of you, AND it's fun to know another somebody you want to connect with is on their way to you too. (The more the merrier, when the conversations are this good!) For me, starting with physical habits led me to wanting to update a few pieces of my daily wardrobe, which got me feeling sparky too. Then I noticed a desire to record podcasts again, which I have been doing. At this point I notice a FUME of a desire to possibly even wake up early (?!) to journal or walk before my kids wake up, which I haven't wanted to do for years. Further out on the horizon is me working on my book again. It's not ready for direct eye contact, but it's there. I can feel it. Not gonna rush or spook it, but I'll enjoy the habits right in front of me while it makes its way over here. With the habit vortex, we're imagining a tiny tornado in 2 liter bottles. Glitter, food coloring, you know the deal. The stronger it gets, the more glitter it picks up. The stuff that once seemed too heavy to lift is now spinning with ease, because we started where we were WILLING to start. Okay. You get it. I hope. 😛 Give it a go and keep me posted! 📮 Thoughts? Qs? ☕️ how to STOP (or reduce) a habit without extremes [OHT 081]

This one is a mini masterclass / case study sharing how I've been weaning myself off my daily caffeine fix without major effort and extremes. DISCLAIMER: I'm clearly not a medical doctor, nor am I suggesting what you do with your body. I am sharing what's worked for me and encouraging you to do your own research and explore what works for YOU and your bod / life. That's the #onherterms way. Tune in for full context, and consider: What's the habit you want to stop or reduce? What are the benefits you were getting when you first started doing it? Ex. For me it was a blend of physiological energy and mental clarity, the ritual to help me refocus in the afternoon, and the pleasure of the taste of the drink itself. What are the drawbacks you're now noticing (which is why you want to reduce it)? Ex. For me I didn't like feeling depending on it, psychologically or physiologically. I'd have headaches on days I wouldn't have caffeine, so I was doing it to avoid pain, and that felt disempowering. I also don't want to mess around with my hormones; I want to help them get back into balance. So if that plays any role, I'd like to see if stopping / reducing helps shift things. What are new things you can do / try to get those same benefits (without the same drawbacks)? Ex. For me it's a whole combo of new habits - the afternoon drink ritual was replaced with adrenal mocktails around carpool time during my afternoon dip in energy. Morning I added in a yummy protein drink with my breakfast and started to delay the caffeine by waiting till I'd had breakfast and at least one full (22 oz) cup of water. Then I added in workouts to my "first hour" routine. Prioritizing more sleep led to more energy too. All of the above = energy from more sustainable and beneficial sources than caffeine. Which led to (gasp!) forgetting to even drink the caffeine, on more than one occasion. It now feels optional. And when faced with a sleepy day, I'd rather find a way to sneak in a 15-25m power nap than to dump more caffeine into my system. In with the new helped me "out" the old. Who says old habits have to die hard?
