This podcast re-posted with permission from the National Press Club. To see the original podcast page for this episode, please go to the NPC website: https://www.press.org/newsroom/nonprofit-news-and-vital-role-it-plays.

Nonprofit newsrooms provide necessary services to communities across the country, and they are the focus of this edition of Update-1. NewsMatch Project Director Jason Alcorn talks to NPC Broadcast/Podcast Committee member Shannon Fisher about the role of nonprofit news and the struggle independent news organizations have funding local watchdog journalism.

NewsMatch is an annual gift matching campaign started by the Knight Foundation, an organization with a mission of informing communities to keep them engaged as a way of maintaining a healthy democracy. Four out of five nonprofit newsrooms provide investigative and explanatory journalism. They frequently replace the reporting of for-profit news organizations that have downsized due to dwindling advertising revenues.
