49 episodes

Between the ages of 45-59? (Give or take a few years) and dating or thinking about it? You're in the right place.

There's never been a better time to date later in life. Let us show you the advantages of dating later in life AND the places you might overlook or trip.

Lakshmi Rengarajan, host and guide of the The Later Dater podcast has spent almost 15 years trying to improve and shed an illuminating light on the culture of modern dating. She's designed one-of-a-kind events that challenged the idea of the dating profile, she worked at the world's largest dating conglomerate (Match), she studied the art of the set-up and co-hosted Season 7 of Vox Media's award-winning podcast Land of The Giants: Dating Games.

And now she's turned her attention to folks dating "later in life". Her work to change, improve and challenge modern dating culture and its tropes have been featured in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Oprah Daily and The Guardian and she's been a guest on the Pivot Podcast with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway among others.

Later Daters are folks who came of age before the smartphone but also have the smarts to leverage and use technology. Modern dating culture has changed quite a bit since the introduction of dating apps but your dual existence might be just to thing that helps you navigate it today.

#45 How to Get Into a "State of Date"

Let's get you into a "State of Date". Most of how people prepare for dates is externally focused - smell good, show up on time, see if you "feel something". There is so much folklore around wanting to feel "the spark" or chemistry that we don't think about how, today especially, we have to prepare ourselves to really be present and ready for a first (or 2nd or 3rd) date. Listen in as Lakshmi sets up and then guides you through a prep/meditation designed to prime you for these one of a kind interactions.

#44 How to Play the "Mid-Range" Game

We know about instant gratification vs. playing the long game. And in dating it's the fling vs. the long-term commitment. But what's in between those two and how might it help Later Daters to think about playing an entirely different game?

#43 How To Do A "Crush Audit"

Why a Crush Audit? "Crush Audits" are a fun and unexpected way to take stock of what you're actually attracted to and why. How much is based on what you're actually drawn to and what's based on what society has prescribed to you? Listen as Lakshmi describes why crushes are so important, the different kinds of crushes you might have and how they are an important emotional map to how you date as a Later Dater.

Refresh and renew your perspective

The LDP offers a refreshing take on dating, particularly for those in their forties. Lakshmi's unique perspective, discovered through the PIVOT podcast, reframed my perspective on partnership dynamics without providing definitive answers. Instead, she encourages a shift in mindset and backs it up with data, offering concrete examples. Thank you, Lakshmi and LDP, for this insightful approach.

Life-changing

I found out about Lakshmi and this podcast when reading a NYT article about why Gen Z does not like the dating apps (happy to know a whole generation agrees with me). I have been trying to get back into dating after I left my marriage of 18 years and feel so clueless and bewildered. While listening to the first few episodes, I felt like Lakshmi had crawled into my brain and uncovered all my hangups—which I was clinging on to for dear life—and neuroses and helped me take them apart. I have been recommending this podcast to everyone I know because I also feel like it’s not just about dating. It’s a really beautiful approach to life and almost any relationship. I actually feel excited, and dare I say it lucky, about starting this new journey. Thank you, Lakshmi!
