Pankration: How The Ancient Greek God Heracles Is A Lineal MMA Champion The Fight Library Specials

    • Sports

Mixed martial arts is the fastest growing sport today. With the prominence of the UFC, mega stars are being born quite regularly. But mixed martial arts isn’t anything new. The sport dates back a couple thousand years by the name of pankration.

Pankration is a Greek martial art that was exactly that: the mixing of boxing and wrestling that was a no holds barred tournament where anything, sans biting and eye gouging, was permitted. The sport was incredibly popular to the Ancient Greek and has many stories that have survived history.

In this podcast, we dive into the ancient art of pankration and break it down in depth and talk the history of the sport. With the Greek being fantastic story tellers, we dive into the stories of two of the tales that tie in to the story of pankration.

The first story is the titular story of this podcast: Heracles. We will go over the story or Heracles and the Nemean Lion. In the story, Heracles takes on the Lion to save a town for retribution. He uses a mix of fighting and creates pankration in the process.

The second legend is that of Thesus and the slaying of the Minotaur. This is another Greek story depicting the need to not only box or wrestle a supernatural being but a combination of both.

We also dive into actual tales of pankration practitioners from Ancient Greece. We go over the stories of Arrichion, Dioxippus, and Eurythesus.

And of course, we talk the rules and methods of pankration and how the events were held and organized. We go over the complexities of the gamelan and how detailed the sport was.

I hope you enjoy this episode and if you do, please drop a sub. I have more podcasts like this coming soon. The next will be the story of another Greek athlete: Milo of Croton.
